My baby girl,

The very first day I joined the SCAA, I thought maybe - just maybe - I'd help them out by becoming a foster mom. I had no idea that within the first few minutes you would become so quickly embedded in my heart.

You ignored everyone else and came straight to me. They tell me you had a reputation of being a biter and a loner, and I didn't believe them - how could such a sweet, innocent face like yours be like the animal they were describing?

The first few months were the hardest. You didn't sleep well at night, and juggling you and my job and my volunteer work was exhausting. I remember thinking to myself, 'Maybe this was a big mistake."

Then I'd look at you and my heart would melt all over again.

We stuck it out kiddo. It's only been 9 months, but they've been the best of my life because you're sharing it with me. Leaving you behind while I had to take two brief trips out of the country broke my heart, and I'm never doing it again.

You're such a good girl, so quick to learn, and always following me around, head cocked to one side as though you're listening to every word I say. There's no one else in the house to talk to, but I never feel alone because I have you. Everyone adores you, the people in the office worship the ground you walkon, and my students think you're the best dog in the world, and I agree with them.

You're so friendly to peeople, even though you've seen the worst side to humanity back before I could bring you home. There's such unconditional trust in your eyes - you've never feared me, and I will make sure I never give you a reason to. You love to travel - something we have in common - and I will never get tired of the smiles you get from perfect strangers who always comment on what a pretty and well behaved girl you are.

I love you so, so much Ruthie. Always have, always will. Momma will always love you, take care of you and protect you. 'Never hurt the baby,' remember?

My heart and soul babe, heart and soul.

I was filmed in a documentary today!

See, SCAA founder Carol Wolfson is putting out a book, and is promoting the SCAA at the same time. However, publishing laws in China are really wonky, and all published books must be published with a cd or dvd. Ergo, Carol hired two filmmakers to do a documentary on the SCAA, our Baoshan facility, and happily-ever-after stories - of which I am one!

So today at O'Malley's in downtown Shanghai, mommy told my story into the mic while I tried to sniff the camera - it looked interesting, what can I say?

She told them how I had been one of the oldest residents at our facility, and that I'd gained a reputation as a biter and a loner (slander! lies! All lies!), and how I'd been adopted out twice and returned for various reasons. Then she told them about her very first day as a volunteer, and how she'd never had any intention of bringing home an animal. Not an hour in my presence and she was MINE to command! MWAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!

Then she told them how all through that Adoption Day, she'd been calling every hour to see if I'd been adopted yet - at the time, mommy was waiting to make sure it was okay with her landlord to bring home any pets - and brought me home that night.

Two weeks later, SCAA adoption leader Cat B called and said there was a young couple who wanted to adopt me. Mommy all but threw a fit over the phone, and stated they couldn't have me because I was taken. It surprised me as much as it surprised mommy!

So in about a month, the video will be up at the SCAA website (www.scaashanghai.org) and the video plus book will be available for purchase, and then the world will see how cute I am. :)

I went to people school!

See, Mommy's been teaching 'Kindness to Animals' to her students, and on March 3rd, I went with her to school to meet all the kids!

I had to stay in an empty classroom with a person Mommy works with for the first little bit, but I had my toys and my carrier so I wasn't afraid. About 15 minutes later, Mommy came in, picked up my leash and led me to the classroom.

There were so many kids there! I ran around sniffing as many pant legs as I could get to but Mommy had a good grip on my leash. All the kids were gawking and making ooohing noises. One at a time, they came up to say hello to me.

I'm happy to say my Mommy had them all properly trained. They all came up to me from the front, they all walked, no running, and they all held out a hand for me to sniff before gently petting me. Some of the kids had a really magical touch and I couldn't help but roll over to try and entice some of them into giving me belly rubs. I love my belly rubs.

I showed them all how I could sit and stay and come and play fetch. Some of them even got the chance to walk me around the classroom, so they could see you don't need to drag me.

Chinese kids don't have much experience with pets like Westerners do, so it was a really good thing for them to experience. And I was so well-behaved that Mommy is going to use me again next month for the grade 2 kids. I can't wait!
