Arrival Story:
Bulova is a mixed breed -- perhaps Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso? He was born in November 1999. Though he now weighs 25 lbs., he’s convinced that he’s a lap dog -- we don’t argue with him. I met Bulova in December 1999; he had been abandoned and rescued in Odessa, Missouri, a town about 45 miles east of Kansas City, Missouri, at about six weeks old. The joy of puppy ownership was short-lived when he contracted Parvo, a deadly virus that most puppies do not survive. Our story is a happy one, though…Bulova came home after 10 days in the hospital…life hasn’t been the same! For as long as I can remember, I have always loved dogs; it is still a mystery how anyone could discard such a wonderful personality! He never has a bad day, and doesn’t let my wife and I have them very often. He adds entertainment and joy to our days and certainly keeps our cats on their toes!! Bulova is, indeed, named after Bulova watches, because he is TRULY a “watchdog”, barking at squirrels in the yard, neighbors walking by with their dogs, and certainly any cat within sight! On the flip side, he enjoys being babied, is quite a snuggler and gives hugs (individually as well as groups) and puppy kisses if you ask him. He LOVES to play fetching games, though he doesn’t ALWAYS give the toy back. He adores people though, and is quite gentle, particularly with children and the elderly. Bulova is a born performer, very photogenic, and loves having his picture taken. He has learned how to come, stay, heel, roll over, he’ll give you a “Hi Five,” shake, sit, lie down, play dead, “load” into the car, and can differentiate between loud and soft barking…for most of these, he has been taught American Sign Language in addition to the verbal command. Despite his “pupmom’s objections, he can also catch ice on the fly! Bulova has earned AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Certification, and is a Certified Therapy Dog through Delta Society with a complex rating, visiting residents at health care facilities all across the metro area…not bad for a puppy who almost didn’t make it!

Bulova has been selected as one of 12 dogs to be featured on the Humane Society's Pet Calendar for 2007, due out in October. We are so excited. It will be sold locally in Petco and PetSmart stores around the metro area. How cool is that?

My Tail of Devotion for Bulova

Bulova is so much a part my life. He makes me laugh by his clown like antics. He causes me to be humble by his humility, and he makes life just plain fun. For a dog that was abandoned at six weeks old and came very close to losing his battle with parvo, he has become quite the puppy. From his rough start to his mission of bringing joy to shut inns and other people who just need a kindred spirit to help lift their spirits, if only for a moment, to forget their problems. It is quite a joy to watch. I don't think he realizes the happiness he brings to peoples lives just by being him...but then again, maybe he does. I just hope that when I grow up that I become the kind of person that Bulova always knew that I could be.
