Arrival Story:
When she was a puppy, Maggie's name was Minnie Apple and she lived with a family in W.V. She had some pretty severe behavior issues and by the time she was 7 months old, her family could no longer keep her. Minnie's family posted on the Dachshund Bulletin board and we read about their troubles. When we contacted them about buying Minnie, they graciously gave her to us! Minnie flew from Pittsburgh, PA to Boston, then came to live with us in Maine. We changed her name to Maggie because we already had dachshund named Minnie in our lives!

Bio:
Shortly before Maggie's first birthday, she became very ill. She lost weight rapidly, drank huge amounts of water and had seizures and periods of blindness. After several weeks of testing she was diagnosed with a congenital hepatic shunt. She was not a good candidate for surgery because of kidney damage she sustained from the high levels of ammonia in her system for all those months. Thankfully, with Rx food and daily meds, Maggie gained back the weight she lost and her seizures stopped. When she's not snuggling on someone's lap or enjoying the fenced in backyard, she spends her time in a large pen in the kitchen because she has problems with incontinence. Her disposition improved greatly once she went on a low protein diet, but she's still a bit aggressive with people she doesn't know.
