Arrival Story:
Sparky was saved from Death Row at a New York City dog pound, thanks to Adopt-A-Dog, a Greenwich, CT-based animal rescue agency, and a caring kennel worker. In New York City, there are too many unwanted dogs and cats, and when they wind up at the animal shelters they are often put to sleep within a few days. This would have been Sparky's fate if not for a kennel worker who took a liking to Sparky's happy smile and wagging tail. He kept changing Sparky's arrival date to give her more time, in hopes that someone would adopt her or an agency like Adopt-A-Dog would save her. Luckily, Adopt-A-Dog arrived one day, and even though they didn't have any more room in their van after loading it with other dogs, they still took Sparky, who sat up front and licked the driver all the way home. A short while later, we went to Adopt-A-Dog looking for a dog for my son David and daughter Kristen. We asked to see Sparky, who bounded out, saw my son, knocked him to the floor, and kept licking his face and wouldn't let him up. Well, we thought that was a good match. But although we thought we picked out Sparky, I have a feeling that Sparky chose us!! We got her on April 24, 1998 (hence, her birthday), when she was 1 year old. It's been a wild ride ever since!!

Bio:
Sparky is now the star of Sparky's Adventures!! So far, I've written five children's books for beginning/young readers about Sparky, "Sparky's Walk," "No Rest for Sparky," "Sparky Coast to Coast," "Sparky's Big Race," and "The Great Candy Caper, Starring Sparky and Her Pals." (The first four are also in Spanish, "El Paseo de Sparky," "No Descanso Para Sparky," "Sparky de Costa a Costa," and "La Gran Carrera de Sparky.") I have done numerous book readings in schools and stores coast to coast (including San Francisco). And $1 from the sale of each book is donated to Adopt-A-Dog, as well as other animal organizations, as a thank you for saving such a wonderful dog. For more info about the books, visit Sparky's Web site, www.sparkyswalk.com.
