Arrival Story: Carla Lou is a rescued Fawn colored APBT whose master had moved and left her for dead in the basement. Fortunately, a nosey neighbor noticed that she wasn’t removed from the house. After a few days, she called the Killeen County Animal Shelter in Killeen, TX. They in turn called Dawn Capp, founder of Chako American Pit Bull Rescue, www.pitbull.us who took her in. When I was trying to find a way to rescue this pit bull in Philadelphia, I came across her website and enlisted her help to try to save the dogs life. After many calls, faxes, and attempts on Dawn’s part, the “rescue” would not release the dog. It was then that I realized these dogs are being victimized. They are not what people say at all, but what people make them. Dawn offered to allow me to rescue Carla Lou if I would pull a police report on myself and go through a rigid adoption process to prove I have never fought a dog. I eventually passed all of the screenings and had Carla Lou shipped from Texas to New Jersey sight unseen. I had no idea what to expect. I had heard terrible tales and always rooted for the underdog, so I wanted to believe she would be amazing. When I picked her up after her long flights half way across the country, she leaped out of her cage for my face…to kiss me. She wagged and danced around me maniacally offering nothing but sweetness, love and best of all, thanks.

Bio: When my (then) fiancée Brian and I were taking Carla Lou to her favorite vet Richelle Smith, DVM at Safe Harbor Animal Hospital in Grand Rapids for a routine check up, we didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into. Since Richelle knew we loved Pit Bulls so much and knew we understood the truth about their gentle nature, she wanted us to meet a dog she had rescued who was half Pit Bull and half Greyhound. She and her vet techs forged a bond with Carla Lou and believed she needed a boyfriend. They introduced us to Howie. It was immediate love. There were no signs of trouble between the two of them, except maybe too many kisses and more dogs stealing the blankets in our bed. Our family now feels complete. We will continue to fight for this “bully” breed until we can overturn the negative press that has been destroying their name in the last 20 years. First it was Dobermans, then Rottweilers, and now Pits. It’s time to stop labeling breeds as dangerous and to start treating these animals how they deserve to be treated, like our children.

Forums Motto: I am the queen bee in our house.
