Arrival Story:
My then b/f & I went to the L.A. East Valley Shelter to rescue a dog. The minute I saw Liebe, I connected with her. The intelligence in her eyes was apparent. She was the runt in a pen with lots of other dogs toppling over her, yet she remained calm. My b/f thought she didn't have enough energy, but I insisted she was the right dog for us. We took her outside into a play area to get acquainted. She was only about 4 months old at the time and had been found homeless on the streets. My b/f threw a ball... she ran, fetched it, came back, dropped it at his feet and sat down, looking up at him. He laughed and agreed that this dog was smarter than the average bear. We took her home that day. We named her Liebe, because it means "love" in German... and she was pure love.

Bio:
At the age of 3, Liebe was diagnosed with advanced kidney failure. I kept her alive for an extra year by doing at-home treatments of subcutaneous fluids. She was so brave! Whenever I'd get the saline bags, she'd walk into the bathroom and lie down, and quietly let me do the procedure, as if she knew it was helping her feel better as it helped flush the impurities from her system. I was devastated when I had to say goodbye to Liebe because she was, without a doubt, the most amazing dog I've ever had the privilege of knowing! I say that with no disrespect to my other dogs, or to anyone's dogs, but people who knew Liebe have all acknowledged that she was, hands down, extremely sentient, wise and human-like. I know I'll see her again someday!
