Arrival Story:
Cairo was dumped off at the Genessee Co. Animal shelter, left out in a cage in the middle of the night. Our IG rescue rep got the call from another small dog rescue telling us he was there and needed help. Sue, one of our volunteers went to "spring" him from the shelter. Cairo (then called "Buddy") was in bad shape. He had (still has) a big scar on his head, and he was terribly neglected. He had the worst teeth I'd ever seen and his nails were so long. He was also missing 1/2 of his tail. :( He was smelly, dirty, and has burns from the ammonia in his urine on his chest from lying, neglected, in a crate for a long time. It was obvious that he was neglected for months and months by whomever had him before he was dropped off at the shelter. I'm just glad that they took him there so he could get the love and care he deserves. Anyway, I met Sue and picked up Cairo. From the first moment he and I saw each other, it was love at first sight. In fact, Sue's first words to me were "he's totally in love with you!" When we saw each other (Cai and myself, that is), it was like seeing an old friend again...I don't know why, how...or any of that, but Cairo, I knew, was someone really special. I took him straight to the vet to have him checked out. While we waited at home for our appt., I trimmed Cai's nails, cleaned his ears, and he had his first really good meal in what seemed like a long time. He was so thankful for everything I did for him. Suffice to say, I knew he was here to stay from almost the first second I saw him. We got Cairo a dental and he lost 12 teeth. He is so happy and healthy now though. All his old wounds are healing and he's a very spoiled, loved boy. He's more special to me than words can say.

We don't really know any of Cairo's background, but my vet believed, and I agree...that Cairo at some point in the not too distant past was hit by a car. He has the scar on his head, a trauma to his left eye, and from what we can tell, at least two of his ribs feel as though they were fractured. Eventually I want to get him a full body x-ray, just to see if we can piece together any more of his story. I also noticed that Cairo loves his walks with me, but as soon as he hears a car coming near, he almost's painfully obvious that he was hit by one just from how he reacts and stares, watching the car as it comes near, then passes by. As the cars go by, it's like he breathes a sigh of relief that they didn't hit him. Poor guy! But don't worry, with me as his mom, nothing bad is EVER going to happen to him again.
