Quick Bio:
-purebred

Birthday:
December 16th 1992

Likes:
Wrestling (gently) with Cody or the cat, or just being near her people

Pet-Peeves:
I just don't have the energy I used to so I can't play as hard!

Favorite Toy:
Stuffed sheep or hedge hog with loud squeakers. Also loves to tear apart brown paper bags--she has done this since the day we brought her home.

Favorite Food:
Pork rinds (Daddy gives me one or two a week) I would love more, but I know they are not good for me!

Favorite Walk:
Helping Mom go to the barn to feed the horses

Best Tricks:
Agility obstacles in her prime, especially dog walk and A-frame. Impresses friends when she obeys hand signals for basic obedience commands

Arrival Story:
We lost a German shepherd, and after a month, I knew we needed to fill the void. A friend lived near her breeder and knew that he was thinking of selling a 4-month-old pup. One look at her father, and knowing that she was bred for temperament in addition to looks, and how could we resist!

Bio:
Incredibly smart and a gentle guardian for children, although she wasn't raised around them. Arthritis and hearing loss slowed her down, but she was still playful, until just before the end. When mealtime came, years fell off her--she pranced around, wrestled with the cat or with Cody, tossed her toys. It made our hearts glad to see our old girl act this way. In the end her legs gave out on her, but her spirit did not. We will miss her terribly.

Mom wrote me a poem

I've been watching over Mom, and I know I'm in her thoughts, 'cuz she wrote this poem:

To Redlands Calypso

All big ears and feet when you first came to me,
Your antics and games were the cause of much glee.
But as you grew and matured day by day,
Your looks and your gait took my breath clean away

Ready for anything—a romp on the grass,
A jump over hurdles, obedience class—
You did what was asked and you offered still more.
And your happy expression was hard to ignore!

Ferocious of bark, but so sweet for all that,
You could guard little children, or cuddle the cat.
My companion on walks and protector at night,
I feared no intruders, I knew they’d take fright.

With the years rolling by, our love for you grew,
But that sad day arrived when both of us knew
From the pain in each step and the dulling of eye,
The time had arrived for that final goodbye.

I have other dogs and I know there’ll be more,
But I miss your sweet face when I open the door.
And when the time comes that I meet my own end,
I pray I’ll see Callie, Calypso, my friend.

Mommy is calling me Fluffy!

I had a bath at the vet's on Wednesday. Mom has them do it because my coat is so thick and takes so long to dry. The vet's helper brushed me and brushed me, then she used a vacuum, because she said I had as much hair as a golden retriever. After my bath, I felt so good! But I was very glad to have my Mom take me home.

The next day, we all went on one of our pasture walks. I get to be off the leash because I mind so well. Even if I fall behind, I keep everyone in sight and catch up to them. Sometimes you just have to slow down and smell everything. We saw a lot of feathers, where a coyote had killed a goose. There was nothing left but the feathers, but we all enjoyed checking it out!

We got special treats when we got back to the house. I love my walks, they make me feel like a young dog again!

Thanksgiving is past

I thought I would start my diary now that Thanksgiving is past. On Thanksgiving, we got some turkey, and a special walk with Mom and Dad. Even our little cat brother Frodo came along--he started following because he wants to be where the action is. We were in our own back pasture, so it was safe for a kitty. (I would protect him, of course, if necessary). He can run really fast, which he did on the way back. I can't run fast anymore because of my arthritis, but the walks are making me feel better.

During our walk Mom and Dad practiced hand signals with me, because I can't hear as well as I used to. I did everything they asked, and got some treats. Treats, sunshine, a long walk-- it was a great day!
