Trooper update

Trooper has figured out where he can go UNDER the hot wire to get into Rocky's pasture and eat horse poop and play with the poodles. He goes in down at the far end by the front gate. He thinks he is all that walking around the horse pasture knowing darn good and well he isn't supposed to be in there! So I go out there to get him (he won't come if I call him) and as soon as I get there to grab his collar he talkes off! And he bunny hops on those back legs faster than I can keep up. I am laughing so hard I can't run. So I just let him when and leave him be.

PLEASE HELP

Please e-mail the seller and tell them auctioning off an animal to help pay medical cost is not in the best interest of the animals. I have attached a copy of my e-mail to them. I tried to show them how mad I really was because I really want them to do the right thing.

My e-mail to the seller:

Please reconsider the items you are auctioning. Surely you can find
something of greater value to auction. I am the mother of a 15 year
old cancer patient myself but also the President of a Great Dane
rescue. A great dane in the wrong hands could be used for repeated
breeding and produce many unwanted and absued puppies that may never
find their way to rescue and live a horrible starving death in the
back yard chained to a tree being bred every heat cycle and never
having human affection, food, or vet care. Great Danes or any
animal require regular vet care, love, affection, shelter, food,
water, heartworm prevention, and air conditioning. They are not
outdoor animals. Please Please....I am sure if you went to local
business and asked them to donate items for you to auction you would
receive a great response. You would actually probably receive MORE
donations too!
Thank you for reconsidering...for the love of the animal

We made a little progress today. We have the chair balanced out but we need to get a longer bolt for the right tire since My right back leg seems to turn out so bad. This is causing me to run over my toe.(owchi) My mom thinks once we get that problem corrected and some height issues adjusted i will be "speed racer". But once mom works with me one day in the chair And let my mind and body have a day off before trying it again. But we'll get there...slow and easy.

Trooper went back to the vet 1/17/06 to check the progress of healing from his knee surgery. The vet feels it is not completely healed and isn't sure we have gained much. He wants to give it a month or two longer. If we do not see significant improvement in that time we will not move forward with a 2nd knee surgery. We just do not feel its worth putting Trooper through the pain and a chance of an HOD relapse for what little we gained with the 1st operation. We are in the process of having a rear wheel chair made for Trooper by www.doggon.com which should allow him to move about outdoors without tiring out so quickly. We have quite a bit of property and Trooper loves being outdoors when I am outside mowing or feeding the horses or whatever. But his weight is taking a toll on his rear legs. He will still be able to use his back legs with the wheel chair but this will keep them from breaking down due to his weight has the majority of his weight will be supported by the chair. Check back soon for pictures!

Today I took Trooper to the vet to check up on the progress of his knee surgery to see if we could move forward with the 2nd knee. The vet feels the original operation has not completely healed and also doesn't feel it has straightened enough or even strengthen enough to warrant the 2nd operation. He told me to give it another month or two but if we didn't see significant improvement he didn't feel it was worth the risk of the HOD relapse or causing him to be completely disabled by not being able to use the 1st leg to bear all the weight while the 2nd one heals.

Another thing we discussed was getting Trooper a cart. He would still be able to use his back legs but it would take some weight off of his front legs and shoulders. He said he watched him coming into the clinic and up the stairs and clearly his front half is carrying most of his weight. At some point this is going to take a toll on him physically. He has gained 10 lbs since his operation and now weighs 100 lbs and is probably only nearing 12 months of age. We took him out in the parking lot and watch him walk also to evaluate him because he really can't get any traction o the clinic floor.

So I think I will move forward with the cart at this point. I for sure don't want to put him through another surgery and then cause him more problems, especially if we aren't going to get any better than what we have right now. But we'll give it some more healing time also.

Its Trooper...laying in the most popular place in the house! Under moms desk! Its fun to watch mom have to stretch her arms 2' and work with a back ache all day. But of course do whatever Trooper's heart desire because im not spoiled or anything.

If you'll notice you can barely even see the scar on top of my knee from surgery. mom is going to try and schedule the 2nd knee for the later part of February.

Trooper continues to improve. He is now using his new leg and is putting weight on and tries to keep up with the rest of his foster brothers and sisters. He is now able to walk with me to feed all the horses in the morning and we are not restricting his exercise at this point. Once we feel his leg is strong enough we will operate on his other leg. He continues to take Vitamin C, Glucosamine, MSM, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, and thyroid medications along with a low dose of steriods. We are slowing decreasing the steriods to see if the HOD is gone!

The vet called today and told me Trooper's surgery went well and once he got in there he saw that the bone coming out of Trooper's hip actually came down and took a sharp right turn. It had to be shaved and molded while ligaments were moved, etc. He did the best he could to align the knee, change the direction of the patellar groove and moved the tibial crest inwards. He has 2 pins that normally are very hard to put in but his bones are so soft he virtually could push them in. (new supplement will be vitmain D and Calcium) He is now back with me to recover. He told me when I arrived they would bring him out on a stretcher and put him and the blanket in my truck and then I could take him and the blanket in the house. To take him out I would be carrying my 100 lb friend in/out for a couple of weeks on a stretcher. I asked them to have the Dr. help me let him potty before I took him home so they had me do some paper work and when I walked into the exam room to meet with the Dr. Trooper was standing there looking at me beside one of the vet techs! I had him go get Trouper Douper a blanket so he wouldn't continue to try and hold himself up on the tile floor with 3 legs. The vet walked in and said, "were you surprised to see him stand here?" And I almost started to cry and said, "yes". He said, "well I was surprised to see him walking down the hall to go outside and go potty too. I would have never guess this guy would be walking on 3 legs...he just simply amazes me." I began to tear up and said, "Thats my Trooper. He has been amazing me and all of his friends for many months which is exactly why he is here today. We felt if any dog could beat the odds it would be him." Trooper proudly WALKED OUT of that vet clinic today without a stretcher. I bought a full size memory foam mattress cover and cut it in 1/2 along with one of those egg crate mattress covers and cut it in 1/2 and that makes one nice dane dog bed. I covered it with some nice donated sheets and he is comfy! And for $70 I made 2 of them. (ummmm Wendi.......next money making project??) He loves his Karanda bed but at this time he can't get on and off of it.

He can't have any running or excercise for 2 months. We also need to pray the 1 leg he can use in the back can hold on long enough to allow the leg that had surgery to heal. And of course....please pray the HOD doesn't rear its ugly head again. But you know what...Trooper and I are survivors....we will pull through it together. He will go back in about 3 months to have the pins removed or they will remove them when they operate on the other leg if this surgery works.

Thanks again for everything everyone has done for this boy....he is Truly an Amazing story. He has only been to the vet that operated on him today 2x's and everyone in there knows him and loves him.

ps.....he is ready for Halloween NEXT year (***note that collar Lori***)...he like it so much this year he wants to get ready for it early!

We are leaving for the hospital for Trooper's big surgery day after last weeks reschedule. He should go into surgery this morning. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Not sure who needs them more....me or him. I am worried about my boy. This morning he is running and playing with his poodle friends and it brings tears to my eyes because I know after today it will make or break him in the weeks and months to come. So please take a moment to remember him.
