Arrival Story: For those that are new to Trooper’s story….he was picked up as a stray in a mall parking lot in Austin, TX. For the 1st 2 months he had to be assisted in walking/standing. He was anorexic and ran 105 degree fever. These are all side affects of Hypertophic Osteodystrophy(HOD) We have lost him nearly 3 times. He has been a Trooper through all of his set backs and has the determination to want to get better He is the featured poster boy for the rescue he is in Willis texas
I just feel that his will to live despite all should be Hope for others that may suffer from HOD for more on Trooper http://www.animals1st.com/

Bio: As Trooper has gotten bigger his back legs have continued to get weaker, though his HOD has thankfully been stable. We feared that our sweet boy had yet another battle ahead but needed to know what we were dealing with so it was off to the specialist again. Unfortunately, our fears were right. Trooper was diagnosed with more than one problem. First, both of his patellas (knees) are subluxated. This means they are both dislocated/not in the socket. This is a big part of what is making his back legs look so crooked and also causing him discomfort, and a great deal of weakness. He also has what is called a valgus defect of his tibia and femur. Basically, this means his 2 long bones in his rear legs, are not quite as straight as they should be, but that is not really causing him any pain, and not something that the orthopedic doctor feels like should be fixed at this point. Finally, he has mild hip displaysia. While this could cause him problems later in his life, it is not severe enough that the doctors feel like it is causing him problems right now.
We were devastated to get this news. After battling Trooper's very severe HOD for several months and nearly losing him more than once, we really felt like we had finally made it. So to now be faced with what really is another life and death decision for Trooper is just heartbreaking. Unfortunately, if he does not have his knees fixed surgically we will more than likely have to put him to sleep in a year or less the way things are progressing now. However, being a rescue and relying strictly on donations to keep the rescue running, it is hard to justify spending $2,000.00 on one dog. We keep trying use this rationale that it is not logical to do this surgery, and we keep coming up with the same answer.....we have brought Trooper too far, and he has fought to live too hard to give up on him now ( TROOPER ) .I came to you in the late night hours my legs ached with pain
I know you would have took me in whether it by boat, taxi, or train.
Once tossed out as a stray my body raging of fever and nearly dead
I knew I was safe when I felt your touch and I could rest my head.
I was driven by a stranger to meet you on a dark road in the middle of the night
Only to find an angel willing to help me with my long hard plight.
There have been days I no longer could carry on, and the look in your face
told me together we were going to beat this with God’s amazing Grace
So keep trying mom, I am not ready to give up. BY HOLLY (Troopers mom)For more info visit me at http://www.animals1st.com/

Trooper has figured out where he can go UNDER the hot wire to get into Rocky's pasture and eat horse poop and play with the poodles. He goes in down at the far end by the front gate. He thinks he is all that walking around the horse pasture knowing darn good and well he isn't supposed to be in there! So I go out there to get him (he won't come if I call him) and as soon as I get there to grab his collar he talkes off! And he bunny hops on those back legs faster than I can keep up. I am laughing so hard I can't run. So I just let him when and leave him be.

Please e-mail the seller and tell them auctioning off an animal to help pay medical cost is not in the best interest of the animals. I have attached a copy of my e-mail to them. I tried to show them how mad I really was because I really want them to do the right thing.
My e-mail to the seller:
Please reconsider the items you are auctioning. Surely you can find
something of greater value to auction. I am the mother of a 15 year
old cancer patient myself but also the President of a Great Dane
rescue. A great dane in the wrong hands could be used for repeated
breeding and produce many unwanted and absued puppies that may never
find their way to rescue and live a horrible starving death in the
back yard chained to a tree being bred every heat cycle and never
having human affection, food, or vet care. Great Danes or any
animal require regular vet care, love, affection, shelter, food,
water, heartworm prevention, and air conditioning. They are not
outdoor animals. Please Please....I am sure if you went to local
business and asked them to donate items for you to auction you would
receive a great response. You would actually probably receive MORE
donations too!
Thank you for reconsidering...for the love of the animal

We made a little progress today. We have the chair balanced out but we need to get a longer bolt for the right tire since My right back leg seems to turn out so bad. This is causing me to run over my toe.(owchi) My mom thinks once we get that problem corrected and some height issues adjusted i will be "speed racer". But once mom works with me one day in the chair And let my mind and body have a day off before trying it again. But we'll get there...slow and easy.
