Arrival Story:
We adopted him when he was 9 months old from Great Dane Angel Network. He had been rescued from a backyard breeder (who was a supposed drug dealer) who kicked him and the other dogs around and yelled at them. He was so terrified of human contact that he had to be carried to the car.

Bio:
Simon was diagnosed with OCD before we adopted him. It is a genetic defect of the shoulder joint where a piece of the cartilage breaks off and floats in the joint space. This is very painful. Simon had to endure 2 separate surgeries (one on each shoulder) to correct this. Both surgeries occurred within the first 2 months he came to live with us. After a very long recovery, we enrolled in an obedience class. He did very well and became a much more confident dog (he was terrified of men, thanks to his previous owner). He has since earned his AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate (CGC), his Companion Dog (CD) obedience title (and even earned High in Trial (HIT)--like best in show, but for obedience) , his Rally Novice (RN) obedience title. He has also passed his Dog Scouts of America Test (DSA) and has earned 9 badges so far: first aid, travel safety, dog care and maintenance, rally obedience, backpacking therapy dog, overnight camping, geocaching 1 (he's also working on a 2nd geocaching badge), and the art of shaping (painting) . He is also a registered Delta Society Pet Partner therapy dog and volunteers once a week. Currently we visit Medical City Children's Hospital and Jonathan's Place, a temporary emergency shelter for children who have been abandoned, abused, or neglected. We are members of the SPCA of Texas' Compassion Connection therapy dog group. Simon has walked in 4 separate rescue parades at both local and National dog shows to raise awareness for purebred rescue. He loves hiking and geocaching (www.geocaching.com) too. In 2006 he was the finalist for the working dog group in the Dog Show USA contest. He made the news and the front page of the paper! (We were really excited about all of the ProPlan dog food he won too!) Simon has also been featured in a book titled, "Unleashed" by Lisa Wogan that was released in 2007 about outdoor activities you can do with your dogs (he was featured for geocaching). He is also featured in a book called "Dog Heroes: Dog Scouts of America" that was published by Bearport Publishing. In November 2007, Simon suffered a spinal cord injury due to a degenerative area in his cervical spine (diagnosed by a MRI) and was completely lame in both hind legs. We are happy to report that after some steroids, and extreme rest, Simon is almost back to normal. He still has occassional weakness in his right hind leg, but nothing like he was before. After 2 1/2 months of not volunteering, he has started back. We are so thankful to God and all of Simon's supporters. I couldn't have made it through this without you! Simon retired from his work as a therapy dog in early 2009. He has a hard time getting around these days, so now he is happy with his new career as a professional couch potato!
