Arrival Story: My husband wanted a dog of his own ( I had 2 already) and we decided to adopt one for him as soon as we got settled into our new house together. So, one Saturday afternoon before we had moved we stopped in the Humane Society as we had done before "just to look". Andrew had never had a dog of his own before so we were trying to get an idea of what kind he might want, as well as what breed might fit best with our other 2 dogs (low-key and mellow, preferably).
Next thing I know, Andrew is nose to nose with a little white jack russell puppy and they were in love. I was relieved to find he wasn't ready for adoption until the following Wednesday and was able to gently convince my husband that it was for the best, we should really wait to get settled in first, that Petey was sure to get adopted with no problem he was so cute, and that there will be plenty of other dogs needing homes a month from now. Ones that weren't Jack russell terriers. Calm dogs. Dogs that don't run circles around everything that moves and aren't obsessed with THE BALL. Dogs more our speed...you know, couch potatoes.
We (grudgingly) left, but I heard about Petey for the rest of the weekend.
By Wednesday it seemed he had maybe forgotten about Petey, but unfortunately I hadn't. I knew what it felt like to find that one special dog that you just instantly connect with and how sure my usually indecisive husband had been about this one.
Against my better judgement I soon found myself outside the Humane Society, waiting for them to open. I adopted Petey and was told he could be picked up the next Saturday after he had been neutered.
If there was any lingering doubt that I had done the right thing by coming back to get Petey after we had spent the last 3 days convincing ourselves that waiting was really the right thing to do; it vanished completely when my phone beeped and I read a text message from my husband:
" I wonder if Petey got adopted?"
He sure did. Heaven help us.
Bio: He is every bit the hyperactive, stubborn, argumentative, comical, ridiculously intelligent dog I had always expected a Jack Russell to be (and then some). And we wouldn't trade him for anything in the world - he's awesome. He has long legs for a Jack (pointer influence) which allows for wicked counter snatching skills. His favorite target - sticks of butter and avocadoes.
