Best Tricks: Being loyal

Arrival Story: Black Jack had been abandoned along with his mate and a bunch of puppies. The female was so ill she died within days and the puppies were fostered by a woman and her teenage daughter until they were old enough to be adopted. I found homes for them but Black Jack was a problem. I didn't want him because I had cats and a little dog, Honey, and I was afraid he would be aggressive. So a friend said he would take him in but his other five dogs ganged up on him and seriously injured him.
Of course, I immediately removed him from that home. For some reason Black Jack took a shine to me, so I reluctantly took him home. Without a doubt it was the best thing I've ever done!

Bio: He had heart worms and was injured pretty bad by my friend's dogs. I had to nurse him back to health. I originally kept him in a room separate from my other pets. I noticed he slept pressed against the door to my bedroom. At the vet's he simply ignored the other animals, even a loose cat who rubbed up against him. So I tried him with my other pets and he's like a long-suffering big brother. He never snaps at them at all and only growls at the cat (who really believes she's a dog) when she steals his bone. And she really does take it!
Black Jack is the most loyal, quiet, friendly, loving, gentle dog I've ever known. He has hip problems and is pretty old, I'm guessing 12-ish, but I love him a lot and can't imagine how I ever could have considered not keeping him.
People should really not shy away from older dogs and those with problems. This guy is more grateful to me than most kids are to their parents!

Mom doesn't know what it is and she's taken me to the vet who says I'm just old. Mom gives me soft food now and I like that but I have to wake her up a lot at night to go out, I'm stiff and sore, and I'm itchy, too!
Now I'm shaved and look all naked, but I do feel a little better. And I miss Honey. She was my little side-kick and my friend. Especially when Mom goes out, I hate being alone. So Mom got me a dog-sitter with a girl dog of her own. I like that.
I still want to hang around and protect Mom. She needs me. She told me so.

The World's Most Perfect Dog isn't doing too well lately. The vet took some tests and we should know something soon. It doesn't look good. He's quite old now.

I have some joint pain these days and the house is so quiet with Nana and Honey gone. I don't like it when Mom leaves me alone so she's arranged for a dogsitter to take me every day until she gets home. The sitter has a girl dog I like and I get lots of treats there so it's ok. Still, I'd rather stay home with Mom.
