Arrival Story: We began looking for a second basset hound when Josie was two years old. Marika is a loner so Josie had no companion to play with. When we brought Devlin home that all quickly changed. Devlin and Josie seem to be soul mates. They are polar opposites but are great together. They cannot stand to be separated. Devlin is a momma's boy. Nothing makes him happier than sleeping beside his momma. He needs to be touched and loved at all times or he voices his displeasure. Devi is a talker. He communicates with a series or barks, grunts, moans and cries all punctuated by a poke with his nose. Devi still carries the scar of his encounter with a snake. We rushed our boy to the vet with a swollen nose and difficulty breathing only to be met with laughter from the vet staff because his swollen lips made him look like a platypus. Unfortunately, he IS a basset and still leads with his nose.

Bio: Devi lost most use of one back leg in October 2004 after having emergency surgery on a disc in his neck. He still gets around well enough to do a three legged run after his three sisters. Update--on May 8th, 2006, I came home to find Devi once again unable to move anything but his head. I rushed him to the neurologist in Charlotte dreading what I would hear. This time the problem was a ruptured disc in his lower back. We agonized over our choices: to put him through another major surgery or let him go to The Rainbow Bridge peacefully. We decided on the surgery. We are now one month from surgery and Devi can walk without assistance. He is even weaker in the right rear leg but HE CAN WALK. We expect him to slowly regain his strength and become more sure footed. We have put him on a diet hoping he will lose about 15 pounds and take some of the stress off his back. Update September 22, 2006--We sent our baby boy to the Rainbow Bridge today. He is finally able to run with Marika and Gypsy again. Almost exactly two years after his first back surgery, his back went out again last night. We hoped that rest would make a difference, but we had to let him go before his suffering became too great. Your mamas love and miss you, Devi Boy.

To show my mommy how much I love her I brought her a little gift today. It was a big surprise so I kept it hidden in my mouth until she let me in the house. As soon as I was in the living room I dropped the surprise at her feet. Boy, she really loved it. She yelped in pleasure when she saw her fine gift and scooped it up off the floor. I know mommy loves birds so when I saw one within reach in the yard, I pounced. I might be a three legged doggie but I still have some smoothe moves! I don't get the chance to give mommy gifts that often so I know she loved her surprise birdy. My gift was so much better than the grub worms that my sister Josie gives to mom!
