Arrival Story:
My mommy was living in Wellington for the winter and missed her only dog Rummi like no other, but knew, after fierce negotiations with her mother that Rummi would probably stay in CT for a very long time (if not forever.) Terribly sad that she couldn't bring Rummi with her now that she was finished with college, she decided to go to a local animal shelter to see what she could see. Since she'd found Rummi at the tiny local pound in CT she had great confidence that the greater West Palm Beach area would have many good dogs who had somehow ended up homeless. So one day during her lunch break she looked up the nearest shelters, noted the times they closed and since only one was open later than she worked headed to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. She was looking for a medium-sized, grown-up male, preferably some kind of cattle dog mix or a similarily dispositioned herding dog. As she'd suspected the county shelter was one long row of primarily pitbull and hound mixes. Yet she saw two dogs who she decided to look at - a chow mix and me. She took me out first to play with me and though I was only 5 months old with feet the size of small saucers she instantly fell in love with me. When I was a baby I looked more German Shepherd than I do now, especially since my ears were trying to stand up (they eventually gave up,) so she reminded herself how obsessed she'd been with shepherds when she was little when all she did all day long was dream about dog and horse breeds. I was so cute and I wasn't barking, I gave her kisses all over, went away to sniff something, but as soon as she whistled or made some noise I sped right back to her side. She took the chow-chow mix out too but her heart was already stolen. She took me home that evening, she had to in order to prevent someone else from snatching me up, stopping at Petsmart on the way home, and I was such a good boy, kissing her face as she drove but not impeding her driving abilities. I slept in a crate the first night and was superb (mommy doesn't know if that meant someone had taken the time to crate-train me or it was just the first sign of what an incredible dog I am.) I didn't have much training as far as sit, stay, down, come, whatever, but I was so naturally wonderful I learned very quickly. I even followed Mommy around the horse show grounds the next day and proved to be a natural around horses. Another interesting tidbit: I arrived at the shelter (I don't know why my first family had to get rid of me, I'm so amazing) on Feb. 7th, 2005. My new Mommy came to find a dog and consequently took me home on Feb. 8th, 2005! Mommy always jokes that I'm the most spoiled rescue dog since I only had to spend one night in the slammer.

Bio:
I am really 1/2 German Shepherd, 3/8 Pitbull, and 1/8 Chow - I have a Curly chow tail and a black spot on my tongue! I am a wannabe Border Collie who loves frisbee, fetch, agility, and being a barn dog. When I get a little older I want to be an agility star first and foremost, and possibly some day a search and rescue or therapy dog. Also, (and VERY impotantly :) ) Thor is pronounced "tor" as in tornado, torpedo, tortoiseshell, etc. And my secret true name is Umm-Thor-Itchum-Scratchum.

So, a lot has been going on since I last wrote. I can't remember if I said that I'm now a master weaver even if the only weave poles I have to practice with are sized for a jack russell! I've been jumping up a storm and am anxious to get into some agility classes. Come ON mom! Please! But we really don't have much extra time. We have a gazillion horses to ride/show/train, etc. Mom really needs my help with all that. I'm a great ground dog - I watch her ride and make sure she's doing everything right. Sometimes when the horses are being bad and want to spin or spook or something I think I should help but Mom says I have to lie down and let her deal with it. Well okay, but I'm ready to help if she needs me to. I've been swimming and convincing all the cats at the barn and at home to play with me. They're coming around which is awesome. Even the horses have been super friendly. There's only one horse who wants to chase me out of the stall when I go in now. All the others let me kiss them and they give me back rubs with their big lips. I was a little nervous at first when Mystras started rubbing his head on me - I wasn't sure what he was trying to do but Mommy said he was just itchy and playing with me so I just looked a little worried and let him. The horse shows are awesome - I missed Florida sooooo much this summer!

So basically my life consists of working hard all day long and then sleeping hard when I get home. I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting to mention, but hopefully Mommy will update my diary for me when I remember. :)

Ciao!

Well, i haven't written in awhile because i have been soooooooo busy. Christmas was great, i got a big giant stuffed animal that is probably a bug of somesort but mommy calls it my "turtle." it has too many legs to be a turtle, but oh well. all it's little feet have squeakers in them and the big shell center makes a great grunting noise when i push my nose into it.

Mommy and I finally made it back to Florida for the horse show season! We left the day after christmas, visiting friends along the way and arrived in Florida on the 27th. We stopped for the night in North Carolina and that was okay, but I knew that wasn't my new home. But once we got off 95 and rolled down the windows I smelled my homeland! I was back in Florida, where I was born. As soon as we got to the house and hopped out of the car i was soooo happy. I knew I was home! Mommy thinks I'm so smart. I watched her unpack and then promptly went into the alligator-free pond in the back yard. That's one of the great things about Florida - there's always somewhere to swim.

I love my new work too. There are other dogs that are around sometimes which is fun, but there are two barncats who live in the tack room that are lots of fun (i just want all the kitties to love me!!) The horses are great too - there's one horse who just got gelded so I try to lick the blood off of his hind legs. I have to be careful because I know horses can kick. But we're buddies - he tries to bite me sometimes since he still thinks he's a stallion and the king of the place, but really he likes me. He lets me lie in his stall under the water buckets when Mommy goes in to check on him. I even went back to the horse show and saw some people I hadn't seen since last year - they admired how much I'd grown and how handsome I am. Life is just great - mommy is so happy to be back in florida and even though it's kinda hot from time to time I like it better here too. I'm just about the happiest dog in the world. Being a barn dog is hard work, but soooo much fun.

Well, I do miss Rummi. She stays with the grandparents in Connecticut... :( But it's good because I like being an only child. Oooh! but there is some other good news - I get to chill with Ama again! Ama (pronounced Ah-mah) is the jack russell i lived with last year. Ama's mommy and my mommy are great friends and decided to find housing together this year after having met last year renting rooms from a mutual friend. Ama and I love each other so much, but she is in heat right now which is too exciting and I get in trouble if i harass her.

Okay, well, hopefully I have time to keep the diary going, we have to run now and do barn check and evening feeding! (Hopefully mommy drops a carrot - i love those things....)

Sleepover!

So Rummi and I got to have the very best fun time last night. After work Mommy brought Beauty and Tanner home with us to have a sleepover!!! Tanner and Beauty's Pappy had to go somewhere for the night so they were going to stay at the kennel but instead they got to come home with us. Mommy loves babysitting dogs, especially these two because they're the very best dogs, next to Rummi and me of course. Well Beauty and Tanner were excellent house guests - Rummi and I were a little confused because Mommy didn't tell them not to jump on the couch or go upstairs but if Mommy says it's ok, I guess it's ok... But still, not fair Mommy! Just because they're guests they get the most comfortable beds in the joint? Sigh, well at least I get to sleep with Mommy because that is the very best ever.

Oh, and a first for me, I had my first real kiss. All my friends have kissed me before at one time or another, but I usually reserve my kisses for the human species. But yesterday I actually kissed another dog! Mommy was so proud. I don't really care, but she insisted I include this charming little tidbit in my diary.

Anyways, I'm sacked from my exciting sleepover so I think I'll take a nap. Ooh I love my doggy friends they're so wonderful :)
