Arrival Story:
I got her from a girl I used to work with. Her husband was at a store and someone walked in and said I found a dog she is tied up outside anyone can have her. So he took her home. They tried to find the owner and when they couldn't they started to look for a home for her. I didn't have any dogs. The last dog I had was when I was a kid. She said she had a Sheltie-mix. I knew what a Sheltie was and thought they were very nice and pretty dogs. My daughter was 16 yrs old and I had no other children. I decided that was the time in my life that maybe I could take a dog. I called my husband who is a big dog lover and asked if he was interested. He said we could take a look at her. He really wanted a dog. So I made arrangements to go over to their house that night. When I called after I got home to let them know we were going over, her husband said he didn't know if he wanted to give her up. He wanted another week to think about it. I told him that if I didn't do it that day then I might change my mind and we were going over there. We went to see her and just fell in love with her. She was very scared but she bonded with my husband right away. I had to go to the store that night and buy her a collar, leash, bowls, food and toys. She was found with a choke collar on her and a piece of rope tied to it.

Bio:
Little did we know that when we got her she had very bad emotional problems. She was so afraid of people that she would lunge at them to keep them away. She was good with other dogs and little kids. We could tell she had been abused. She was neglected and obviously abandoned. We had people tell us not to waste our time on her to have her put to sleep. I knew deep down there was a very sweet dog and if I could just get to that then she would be able to show people she wasn't mean. I bought books on Shelties and found out they were naturally shy around strangers. We figured she hadn't been socialized either. I took her to training classes and only used positive methods with her. I had great instructors who helped me. I got excited when she did a good job and kept everything up beat. I tried alot of different methods to get her to realize people were not mean. We spent a lot of money, but she was worth it. I found out about Therapy Dogs International and the good they brought to people when visiting with your dog. That became my goal for her to get her CGC and then TDI. She failed the test 2 times simply because of nerves. The second time she failed I was devasted and cried. I had worked so hard on her and she was finally coming around and not on the defensive all the time. She would actually go to people and sit next to them and wait to be petted. Finally a third time she passed the CGC test and then became a TDI dog. She has been certified for over two years and has gotten enough visits that she has her TDIA (50 visits) and TDIAOV (150 visits). She is working toward her TDIRVA (250 visits). People who didn't know her before think she is just the sweetest dog. People who knew her before can't believe the change in her and how calm she is. When we visit nursing homes or group homes she knows she has a job to do and she does it well.
