Cassie was adopted into our family last March when she was 8 weeks old. Scarlett, my 15 year old Australian Cattle Dog had went to the Rainbow Bridge February 1, 2003 and we were looking a new baby to love and to torture our 5 year old Wolf/Shephard/Lab mix Duncan -- Cassie fit the bill perfectly. She's always been a big ball of furry love.

Cassie was born January 27, 2003 in Holly Springs North Carolina and moved to her home in Buies Creek in March 2003. She's the youngest in a house with a 5 year old doggie brother Duncan and a 4 year old catbrother Smokey. She's the only girl and is slightly spoiled. She likes that.

This is Cassie's Mommie ... composing this last entry in her diary. This was from the email notification sent to family and friends the day after Cassie left me to join others of our family at the Rainbow Bridge. Cassie was 9 and a half years old -- too young in my opinion to lose. She was and always will be my darling golden girl.

Cassandra Edwards: January 27, 2003 to August 14, 2012

August 15, 2012:

It is with a broken heart that I write of the passing of my darling baby girl Cassie yesterday. I am still in shock. It happened so fast and so unexpectedly. Cassie had been her fine normal self last week. She’d had the best time with my niece and I as we had a sleepover last Thursday. Friday she was fine. Saturday she didn’t eat as much and wasn’t interested in going out on her normal schedule. Sunday she threw up once and was lethargic. She didn’t eat anything. The same thing happened on Monday and she wouldn’t get up so I called the vet who sent 2 techs to pick her up. She spent Monday night at the local vet and yesterday morning I got a call that I needed to take her to the specialty hospital. When I picked her up at the local vet they had to carry her to the car. I knew she was very sick. I had initially thought that she was just having a thyroid flare-up and needed to be hydrated and modify her thyroid dosage. No, I was wrong. She was severely anemic and hypoglycemic. Her blood sugar was so low it wasn’t even registering. The specialist came in and told me lymphoma.

She was already going and we decided to help her on her way and ease her into her next great adventure at the Rainbow Bridge. I got to spend an hour with her privately and was holding and kissing her head when she went to sleep and passed on. I know she is happy and whole now … terrorizing her big brother … and loving her Granny (my Mom who passed away this past March). Cassie is happy.

My heart is shattered but I loved her enough to let her go.
