Arrival Story:
i didn't want a dog, but then i decided i did. i went to a breeder's house, saw the litter, and met my new puppy. i had to wait two weeks before picking him up. then i decided i didn't want him anymore. i called the lady who had the litter and told her. then i changed my mind again and decided i did want him. so i went and picked him up. i didn't think he was cute. whn i look at the pictures from that day, however, i realize he was. i don't know what i was thinking.

Bio:
Flint had a congenital herniated diaphragm. his intestineswere looped around his heart. when he was 7 years old, a vet discovered this. he saw it on an x ray and recalled the condition from a brief note made in lecture by one of his professors. 'you'll never see this, but this is what it's called. next slide please' When we discovered that flint had a problem, we got advice from everyone we could -- the condition could kill him at any time, but it might be that it would never be a problem; he'd already survived 7 years as an active dog. fixing the problem meant flint would have to be opened up and have his guts pulled down into his lower abdomen. We decided not to do the operation because the operation, too, could kill him. the day after deciding not to operate, flint got bloated, had a seizure, and almost died. we took him to the doctors at davis who had advised us not to get the operation done. he was operated on. an hour after leaving surgery, he wanted to go for a walk. Flint comes to school with me everyday and sits in my classroom while the kids pet him.
