On Sept 15th Brutus and Jade were at my brothers house when it went up in flames. Niether made it out of the fire along with their family cat. I miss them dearly, it took me a long time to be able to come on to dogster in order to update thier pages. I am just thankful that none of my human family was harmed in that fire. Here is a story that my friend wrote in tribute to them. She writes amazing stories for when a dog goes to the rainbow bridge.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~
Good Evening: Hewoooo! This is Muffin 2 calling you with a serious message to say that we have 3 new residents up here @ the Rainbow Bridge. This was a very sudden entrance and I have to say it caught all of us off-guard. We had been having a late-night snack; when I heard the alarm warning of impending guests. We were so unprepared, when I jumped up from the table, I dumped the bowl of ice cream upside down & it fell on the floor with a loud splat; I was so embarassed. I've never been caught so unprepared, but I've never had prospective residents arrive in such a hurry.
They were literally arriving under no fanfare; all three were in shock. They said they had been unaware when the fire began. Brutus could have gotten out but he could tell that Jade couldn't make it. He looked back, but she had been overcome by the smoke. She croaked at him and commanded him to save himself; he started for the door but he looked back at the last minute. He couldn't do it; he turned back and went back and sat by her side as the smoke rolled in. "You fool, Brutus," she whispered to him, "but I love you for staying with me." "I can't leave you Jade; you're my special girl and always will be. It's okay; we'll still be together." The cat crawled over to them and burrowed it's head in Jade's soft fur. "Can I come too?" the cat asked in a squeeky voice. "Of course you can," answered Brutus, realizing it was the last words he would ever say.
They all laid down, waiting for that last escape of breath, knowing there was to be a life after this death. Brutus consoled himself with the fact that they would all be together, even the stupid cat. He had never been fond of the cat; always just "put up with it" - - but now, he looked at it differently. The cat deserved to go with them; he could be magnanimous in this, the last breath he was to draw. He laid his head down - - he didn't know where they would be when the firemen finally found them, but for now, they were together. His last thoughts were that they were together and he felt proud that the family had all gotten out. He was so happy over that, he loved them so much. He hoped they knew that it was fast and that they were all together at the end.
He felt himself being lifted - it was like he was floating. What was this new experience? He opened his eyes and all he could see was white fluffy things - - what was this - - marshmallows? NO - - they were much bigger - - he saw Jade pass him - he looked down and saw the cat below him; he was floating also - - pretty soon, the white thing stopped and he stepped off. In front of him was this huge, beautiful bridge bathed in a soft golden glow. Jade was standing in front of him and the cat was behind him. The Bridge was in front of him - he stepped forward - a very tentative step, but something in him made him stop!
He looked up - at the end of the Bridge stood a majestic black Dachshund - - he was beckoning him to come forward. "Come on," said Jade, "let's go. He's calling us." "I dont' know who he is," said Brutus; he was, as usual, the more cautious of the two of them. About that time, he saw others lining up behind the black Dachshund; they were cheering them in - - they all waved their paws - - "Come on," they yelled in encouragement. "Come on." Jade stepped onto the Bridge - the cat passed him & followed Jade. Finally, in consternation, he joined the two of them and they all crossed together. "Who are you?" he asked the big black Dachshund. "My name is Muffin 2 and I'm the official greeter here at Rainbow Bridge. Usually we're more prepared, but you came up so fast, you caught us sitting down having a snack." "Snack?" said Brutus, - - "Snack?" said Jade - - "What kind of snack?" - - "Ice cream," said Muffin 2. "That sounds wonderful," said Jade, following the group gathered at the edge of the Bridge. She was making one of the fastest recoveries from the shock of her sudden demise that he had ever seen.
"You know," Muffin 2 said, "you get to pick the menu for the whole 1st week you're here, so you need to make a list of your favorite foods." Jade couldn't believe her ears! Boy, was her list going to be long - - Sassy dropped into line beside her. "Don't worry about Muffin 2 - - he always acts like he's important," commented Sassy; "he's not - - he's just my brother." Jade giggled, "This was going to be allright - she could tell she was going to like Sassy." They all trudged together down the hill towards the cafeteria. Muffin 2 turned back towards the Bridge to make sure no-one had been forgotten or left behind. It was going to be a good evening after all. He liked Brutus and he guessed the cat was okay too. He could see Sassy and Jade with their heads together in front of him. He knew Sassy was enjoying Jade's company; they were probably plotting the menu for the week as they picked their way down the path.
