Arrival Story:
I saw Otis at a local shelter. He was "Dog of the Day" and had a heart on his information card that said, "sweet boy". One of the volunteers who had taken time to work with him put the heart there because he was about to be euthanized and she thought it might help him find a home. I couldn't resist and we took him home. He was very quiet in the cab on the way to our place. As soon as he got in our house, he looked at us and took this huge poo. The three of us (Matt, Otis and I) just kind of stared at each other in shock.

Bio:
Otis's best friend was Eddie, our greyhound/german shepherd mix. When Eddied died of hemangiosarcoma on 6/8/08 it took a lot out of him. He picked a new buddy, Sid (Catahoula Leopard Dog) who came to our home 8/26/08. Despite this, Otis declined. In December he was diagnosed with Cushing's disease. At almost 16 years of age, he began to wind down, lose mobility and control over many things. With the help of a hospice vet, we kept him comfortable and stable through early spring. By May he had deteriorated more and on May 9, 2009, our veterinarian came to our home to help him end his life with dignity. Matt, Sid and I were beside him. I whispered in his ear the story of how he came to be with us and told him he'd always be my sweet boy. He'd had McDonald's earlier that morning (never lost his appetite) and went peacefully. As soon as the sedative was administered, he went into a huge snoring sleep. We like to believe he and Eddie are together and happy now. We miss him every day.
