Getting used to having diabetes....

May 17th 2011 12:12 pm

So, I have been home for almost a week now, and I am getting used to this whole living with diabetes thing. The hardest part is not getting all the extra treats, because I love my treats!! But I have been a really good boy, and I sit very nice while Mom gives me my two injections a day. I think she hates it more than I do. I've tricked her the last two days by not peeing in the cup for her (that's how she checks for ketones and glucose in my urine). I pee when she looks away, I don't want her stealing my pee! BOL! Anyway, things aren't too bad right now. I go back in two weeks for another blood test, and we will see how things are then. Thanks for all my furiends for your pawrayers and kind words for my mom.

Staying at the V-E-T for a few days :(

I have now begun my three night stay at the V-E-T. I have just been diagnosed with diabetes, and may also have Cushings. Mom had noticed I was drinking more water than normal lately, and of course peeing more because I have been drinking more. The last time I was at the vet (just a couple of months ago, since I go every three months for bloodwork, to check on my thyroid), the vet mentioned that my liver enzymes were higher than the last time, and asked about my water intake. Mom said that it didn't seem unusually high, which at the time it didn't, but the vet mentioned to keep an eye on it, since where my levels were, it was a possible indicator of Cushings. So, mom has been watching me like a hawk, and when she noticed that I started drinking more, she rushed me back to the vet, figuring I would get tested for Cushings. Well, the vet did a complete blood panel and urine test, and that is when we found out that I have diabetes! My blood sugar was 362 (it should be closer to 100). I was dropped off this morning, and while I am there, I will also have the Cushings test done. I will spend the next three days getting my blood sugar (hopefully) under control. Mom is not looking forward to the most likely twice a day insulin injections that I will need (truth be told, I'm not looking much forward to it either). Mom is very upset about this, and she misses me so much already. She picks me up on Thursday evening. In the meantime, she is doing research on the best foods she can give me, and what kind of treats I can have, because you know I need my treats!!

~Surgery Day~

Hi Diary,
Long time no write!I have been a very busy pup. We moved to the suburbs, did some construction, mom had a furless baby. I've been spending alot of time trying to get used to the new baby. The pawrents call him Timothy. He's ok I guess. As long as I am the one initiating the contact, I am fine with him. I like to be the sniffer, not the sniffee. I mean, I am the alpha in the house after all! He's really not all bad. I will admit, his toes are kind of fun to lick BOL!!

So after having a cast on my front right paw for about 5 weeks in the winter (due to a small fracture that Mom has no idea how I got), today I am about to undergo surgery on my knee. Somehow, I managed to tear my ACL and meniscus. Mom doesn't understand, since the most strenuous thing I seem to do is walk from one bed to another.

My normal vet couldn't do the surgery (which saves me from the dental cleaning mom wanted to get me - Thank Dog for small favors!) Instead, I am at a special orthopedic surgeon. Mom and Dad dropped me off last night. My surgery will be sometime this afternoon, and I have to stay overnight again. The doctor that Mom spoke to this morning said that I am a really well behaved Pomeranian.

I feel bad for my mom because she was crying when she dropped me off last night. She is so worried about me, because a few years ago, the vet noticed that my heart was beating really slow. So she is so nervous about the anesthesia. She keeps praying to St. Francis that he will look out for me.

It has been a bad week for us pups though. My thoughts and prayers go out to Miss Dixie who just had surgery herself, and my very good friend Merry, who has a bad case of gastroenteritis. Hugs to you both.

Thank you to all my friends who have sent rosettes, lit candles, and sent well wishes to both me and my mom. It means alot to us, and please keep the POTP going!

Wags and licks,
Cosmo

Some exciting news!

I have some exciting news to share.... I am going to be a big brother!! Mommy is pregnant (whatever that means). All I know is that she has been having some trouble getting up after she's been hanging out on the floor with me. The baby is due to arrive on December 12. Mom knows I am going to attack the baby with kisses, just like I do to my bunny fursibs. I can't wait to have a baby of my very own. I will look after him/her all the time. And if that is not exciting enough, we are getting a house! With my very own backyard!!! Mom said the yard is all for me, she wants to get me my very own pool, but I am not sure if I will like that very much. But I can't wait to have grass to run around on. Phew, all this excitement is wearing me out!! It's also time for a Flossie or a Dingo bone, so I gotta run.
Excited wags and licks,
Cosmo

Another Trip to the Vet

Tonight, I went to the vet to have more blood drawn. I have to get my thyroid levels tested every three months since I was diagnosed with a hypothyroid. When I first walked in, there was another Pom there!!! I think his name was Scooby, and he kept growling at me! Dad said he will never call be big or fat again after seeing this dog! BOL!! While I was in the waiting room, this pit bull puppy walked in. I started barking and growling at him right away! I had to show him who was boss!! Then I settled down, even though the puppy was trying to get to me so bad! He just wanted to play with me. I was really lucky that the vet didn't have to shave my fur to get my blood. I'm in between hair cuts, and I'm extra fluffy! In addition to my thyroid test, they are also going to run a complete blood panel, just to make sure everything is working good. My grandma's dog also came with me (we both have hypothyroids, and are on the same every three month schedule). She's going to be 13 years old this month, and has been slowing down a bit. Our vet just started doing glaucoma testing, and he tested both me and Misty. My eyes were great, but poor Misty has a small "bleed" behind her eye. Mom and grandma are going to call and make her an appointment at the opthomoligist. Please say a little pawrayer for her that she will be ok. Thanks alot! I will let you all know how my blood work comes back next week.
Wags and licks,
Cosmo

I have been tagged by my good pal, FurAngel Daniel!!

Here are the rules of the game:

I'm supposed to think of 7 things about myself, and then write them down in a list.

Then, I'm supposed to Tag 7 of my furiends, letting them know, either by pawmail or rosette, that they have been Tagged and to read the rules in my Diary if they choose to play.

Sounds like fun to me! I'm so honored to be included in a game of Tag!Here are seven things about me.....

1. I am a big mama's boy! I love to follow mom around, and I love to sit close to her. I even will sit on her head while she is laying on the couch!

2. I have two bunny fursibs. I like to lick their ears, but I don't really like it when Daisy climbs on my back!

3. I am not a big fan of big dogs. I like to bark at them!

4. I have a hypothyroid, and have to take medicine every morning for it. I am a super good boy, and rarely spit the pill out!

5. I do not play very much, but when I do, I love to play with my soccer ball, or a small stuffie that I can fling across the room. Then I make my mom go fetch it for me! BOL!

6. I am OBSESSED with Dingo bones. And I know how to tell time. I start to whimper just before 8pm, which is Dingo time, and I won't stop until I get one!

7. I think Dogster is one of the most pawsome and special places to be!

Hmmm... okay! Now the hard pawt! Choosing just 7 furiends to join me in this game of Tag!

Here is the list of the 7 furiends I am choosing. There is no pawticular reason I have chosen these furs and they are listed in no pawticular order...

Vet Update

So, mom took me to the dreaded vet on Monday night. I actually don't mind going there too much. They all really like me, and talk about how I'm the best Pom they have ever treated. Poor Phil (the vet assistant) almost lost a finger to the last Pom they had. He showed mom the scar and everything! Well, I had to go for my quarterly blood tests, and it was also time for my yearly exam and vaccinations. He listened to my heart, and said it sounds pretty good, all things considerd, so that made mom happy. She worries about me all the time. He gave me a whole bunch of needles, and I was good through that. Then - he had the nerve to stick a Q-Tip up my butt! Hello!! That's an exit! You're not supposed to stick Q-Tips in a butt! That's just wrong!!! He's lucky I am such an easy going dog. The only time I gave doc some trouble was when he took my blood. That didn't feel good. But it was over pretty fast. I was really mopey when I got home, my mom and dad both gave me lots of extra loving, so it was all ok.
Well, mom called for my blood results last night. Now, it turns out that my thyroid levels are a little lower than they should be. The vet said it's not low enough to be concerned about, and he can't really play around with my dosage too much because it's already one of the lowest dosages I can be on. So, for now, we wait and see how they come back in 3 more months. Mom said she's taking off next Friday to collect a pee sample - I bet you can imagine how much I am looking forward to that!
Bark to you soon,
Cosmo
