Bio: My name, Akela, is a Hawaiian name just like my big brother's and sister's names. My parents picked Akela for me because they liked it and thought the meaning would suit a newfoundland. Akela means "noble" in Hawaiian. Well, right now I'm a very silly, clumsy, hyper puppy so I don't seem very noble at all. But my parents are sure that someday I'll grow into my name. For now, I enjoy chewing on things I'm not supposed to and terrifying my mama and papa by being such a dare devil and reckless pup. I enjoy running full speed around the house and jumping on and over furniture. Playing in the kiddie pool seems to make me especially hyper and happy. Right now I weigh about 90 lbs. and I'm about 25 1/2 inches tall.

is human! We have a little human baby at home now. He smells funny; not like us! Koloa barked, and barked, and BARKED at our new little brother for the first couple of days he was home. But now even Koloa is used to having the little guy around. We like to go on walks with him, and Koloa likes to sit/lie down by him. Leilani mostly ignores him. I like to give him kisses and sniff him.

Well, we moved from Arizona to Missouri! We drove in the car for 3 days. I chewed up two leashes on the first day, within 3 hours of being on the road. I only chewed on my toys after that, once my mom and dad remembered not to leave the leashes within my reach. We stopped in Albuquerque and went to a cool dog park and I stayed in a hotel for the first time. La Quinta sure is generous about letting pets stay! We luv La Quinta. Then we stopped in Oklahoma City and it rained, and rained, and rained, so we didn't get to go to a dog park or for any fun walks that night -- and Koloa had an "accident" in the hotel room, but don't tell him I told you about it. Finally, we got to Missouri and our new home. We have a big fenced backyard, and I luv to bark at the cats and squirrels in the neighborhood. They have the nerve to sit in the green space beyond my fence! Sometimes we get to go to this cool dog park that has a lake. I LUV to swim, and it's a lot of fun. Koloa and Leilani usually only put their paws in but I jump right in and splash around.
I like it here in Missouri, even though I'm allergic to Missouri. I have allergies here. My skin gets pink and itchy. So, when asked about my new home I say that I luv it here, but that I'm allergic to Missouri!
Lord Byron's poem engraved on the tombstone of his devoted Newfoundland dog, his best friend...
Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who
possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
and all the Virtues of Man,
without his Vices.
This Praise, which would be unmeaning
Flattery if inscribed over human
ashes is but a just tribute to the Memory
of Boatswain,a Dog.
