Arrival Story:
My boyfriend wanted a puppy back in 2004 when we first moved in together, but I convinced him to check the local shelter with me first. There we saw a forlorn, skinny dog in a kennel. She was so quiet and scared, she looked like a coyote, and wasn't barking at all like the other dogs. Her name was "Luna," and she was kenneled next to her larger and darker sister "Jessie." Both were escapees from a sled dog kennel that decided they didn't want the girls anymore and so signed them over. Bred for speed and pulling sleds only, they had no training at all and had never been inside. We beat out another woman who was interested in Luna because the shelter staff knew that Luna would need a young, patient, active home. We briefly contemplated adopting Jessie as well, so the sisters could stay together, but it was clear that the dogs couldn't care less about one another, and it would've been hard to have to train them both at the same time. It worked out for the best because Jessie found her forever home the very day that we picked up Luna. We brought Luna - now renamed Jenna - home in May 2004, and she was a terror, of course, not knowing what a house was all about. She was completely unhousebroken, and she shredded and destroyed everything she could reach. After the first week, we were almost ready to admit that we had gotten in over our heads, but we stuck it out, and I'm glad we did. With a lot of time, training, energy, and possessions sacrificed, she turned into the best dog we've ever had. She's so goofy and playful. We never understood how anyone could give her up (well, yes we could, but she's so sweet that it makes up for the fact that she ate our Christmas lights). Sometimes we wonder if, far back in her family tree, she has some wolf. She has the most beautiful wolf-like howl that you'll ever hear, but she doesn't do it often any more. After all, she's a spoiled rotten couch potato now, so what's there to howl about?

Bio:
Alaskan huskies are a working breed, bred for function and not to a set standard. You won't see them in any fancy AKC dog shows as they are a "mutt" breed, with a little of this and a little of that thrown in. They are bred to be fast, strong, agile, and have high endurance. Jenna is a sight to behold when she's running full tilt off-leash (and she has excellent recall, unlike some of her husky brethren). She was transferred from a shelter in Augusta, ME to the Humane Society of Knox County, where we adopted her, and now she lives on the island with us.
