Today is my 40th birthday, but it has always been Crumpet's birthday, too. Growing up with a twin sister, I used to hate sharing my birthday. When I moved away from my sister, I loved finally having my birthday all to myself. That was until Crumpet came along. Crumpet was just the epitome of happiness, and I LOVED celebrating my birthday with my little Crumpet! She always made each day happier, and she made me appreciate all the little things, since every tiny thing made her so happy.
Today, I celebrate my birthday by myself again, but I still share it with my little Crumpet. Happy Birthday, sweet angel!

Crumpet was such a special, sweet, loving pup. Everyone loved her! She even charmed the most dog-loathing people. She was an ambassador for all rescue pups.
It's very hard to type through all the tears...
In case you hadn't heard, Crumpet was attacked by our neighbor's golden retriever (who had always been nice and friendly) in our front yard. The injuries were just too much for our little Crumpet. Her spine and pelvis were broken, her abdomen was ripped open, and she lost so much blood that she had gone into shock. The vet hospital did everything they could. The vet stitched her up- sooo many stitches- hooked up an IV, and placed her in an oxygen tank. They couldn't give her enough pain injections to soothe her. She kept whimpering, and she had such a hard time breathing. The vet said it would be a miracle if she survived. And if she did survive, it would be another miracle for her to survive the very long operation, since she was in such a weakened state and was old and had a heart murmur. And if she miraculously survived that, she would have been paralyzed and would not be able to control her bladder. Sadly, we let Crumpet go.
We were so lucky to have Crumpet in our lives for 9 years. We went "looking" at the Town Lake Animal Shelter and found this skinny, dirty, matted little mop of a dog who was about to be put to sleep. Crumpet had been a puppy mill dog and lived in a cage with 135 other dogs of various breeds. Crumpet had stayed way too long at the shelter during all the court trials against the breeder. When the dogs were finally surrendered, all the younger pups were adopted quickly, but the older dogs had health issues, and no one would adopt them. We fell in love with Crumpet, because filthy as she was, she was so happy to be let out of her cage and jumped and circled around. We had to adopt her. It was well worth the cost of adoption and teeth surgery to bring her into our lives. Who knew hidden inside that dirty mop was a princess?!
Crumpet was certainly our princess. I always joked that Crumpet would outlive all of us, because she loved life so much! She was just the sweetest, happiest, gentle soul. I'm sure she's being welcomed joyously at the Rainbow Bridge. But we're still devastated.
Crumpet's brothers are very sad and confused. They're not eating much, and Kipper has been sleeping in Crumpet's princess bed. Winston has been very clingy. Crumpet was such a big part of all of our lives. We will always miss her. We will always love our sweet angel Crumpet.
Requiescat in pace, sweet Crumpet.
