Arrival Story:
I was living out in Seattle by myself for a while when I grew tired of being alone and missed having a dog around (I grew up with a Golden Ret). So after much searching on Petfinder and not finding anything, I turned to the Seattle Times Classifieds where I called a slew of ads for puppies. I knew I wanted a male Golden but that was just about it. One lady that I talked to on the phone sounded really nice and she liked that I grew up with the breed. So she agreed to put a male pup on hold for me that was different than the others. I asked "different in what way?" and she said that while the other puppies would be off playing, this one would sleeping in the corner. Now that's my kind of dog!! Sounded good to me! The next day I took the day off to make the long drive down to where she was which was almost to Portland, OR -- with the intention to simply "check out" the puppies. But it was love and first sight and came back home with Spence!! Totally unprepared of course!! The breeder had to lend me a big rubbermaid bin to keep Spence in for the 3 hour ride home of which he wanted NOTHING to do with staying in. But he handled the long ride pretty darn well and headed straight to a Petco to get supplies! A year and half later, I moved back to where I grew up here in upstate NY and since I had a big dog, I drove across the country with him to get home! Dad flew out so he could split the driving with me and we made it home in only 5 days with Spence sleeping the WHOLE way in the back seat of my Civic!! Needless to day, I can't believe that he is as old as he is already -- he is the best dog I could have ever had and if could clone him I would!! :-)

Spencer was born on April 3rd, 2000 in Longview/Kelso, WA. His dad, Rascal, was a therapy dog with the elderly -- a very big, very dark Golden with a distinctive white patch on his chest (that Spencer managed to inherit as well!). He was a very sweet, obiedient, smart, gentle dog and it was a real treat to be able to meet both of Spencer's parents. His mom, whose name escapes me at the moment, was a lighter smaller Golden who was equally sweet and nice. Both parents lived right on the property -- in a residential neighborhood near the Oregon border and not too far from Mt St Helens. I claimed parental ownership of Spencer in early June of 2000 -- which is when his primary photo was taken. :-)
