Arrival Story:
I wanted to get another dog because our dog Wunjo was lonely. After taking him to work with me every day for 4 years, I got laid off and had to start leaving him home all day. He started getting really depressed and lethargic. A friend of mine called and said he had found a stray dog during a huge rainstorm; while he was driving and was stopped at a stop sign, a little black dog (obviously mal-nourished) ran up to the front of their car, stood on her hind legs and put her front paws on their hood, and looked inside as if to say “Get me outta here!” They took her in, but their other two big dogs were very boisterous and little Nikki (as they started calling her) was getting a little beat up. He called us up, my partner went to go meet her, and it was love at first sight!

When Nikki came to live with us, she was going through her first heat. My other dog, Wunjo, had been neutered five years before. However, after they had been together a few days, was I surprised to look at the window and see them mating! Nikki is like doggie Viagra! Nikki is the most loving, intense dog I’ve ever known. She lives life with a gusto that I find inspiring. Always ready! She’s the best! On the early morning of March 28, 2005, Nikki was sleeping where she always did, at the foot of my bed. I was awakened by the sound of her crying out. I ran over to her, she cried out once again and passed away. She spent her last day having a great time with Wunjo, playing in the yard and swimming in the pool. The vet said that she more than likely had suffered a heart attack, and that labs were susceptible to sudden death (which I had never heard before). I feel that I let her down in certain ways; i.e., Wunjo was so sick, I always figured she'd outlive him, and then SHE could be the only dog for a while - she could be the main focus of attention, just like she always wanted. But, it was not to be. If there was any way I could have just one more day with her... but I guess there isn't. I loved that dog more than anything. All future dogs will have to live up to her standard.
