Arrival Story:
Not long after we adopted Harvey, we figured out he was a Momma's boy. My husband and children wanted a dog that would hang out with them too. So we applied to adopt a female from the Great Dane Rescue of North Texas (www.danerescue.net). At that time they did not have a dane that was a match for us. So we waited, while we were waiting we decided to foster danes for them. The forth dane we fostered we didn't like one bit! She was our third foster the house (yes, we had 4 danes living with us at the time and only 1 was ours!). She drooled, growled, and was generally not nice. We couldn't wait for her to get better and get out of our home. After months of treatment for Erlichia and she was still not better, my husband told me to get her out or we were done fostering for good. So all teary eyed, I called the coordinator and told her we had to move her out before she began heartworm treatment. The coordinator told me it would take a few weeks to find her a new foster home. We said ok. During that time, she had really began to lighten up. Pretty soon it became very obvious to us that she had been really sick, had never had a family to love her and that the sun set and rose on us. She also stopped growling at us all the time and started purring instead. The call came in on a Saturday on the way to Home Depot. She was going to be moved. I hung up and told my husband. He looked as crushed as I felt. Within minutes I gave him the phone and told him to call, we were adopting Roxy. It took many months to get her well. She had a terrible time fighting the erlichia and then the heartworm treatment was worse. When she was finally clear of erlichia and heartworms, we made it official and Roxy became part of our family.
