May 17th, 2005. It was a little after 9pm when the fireworks started up again. Boy, they scare me and my instinct is to run. I have been feeling a little under the weather but I try not to let my partner (Geo) know. After she gets the papers in the morning and gives me a belly scratch we go for a long walk. Everyday we see something different, she knows I'm feeling my age (11)so we are a little slower now. The last few months I've been entertaining myself with the birds, they fly down and eat out of my new feeding tray. If I lay real still they hop right up to me! Patience and one day I'll catch one! I was very surprised when they started jumping right up and picking my fur for nest material! Today my stomach feels better so I got Geo and Mike both to give me many treats. Many people have been coming by to visit and I get many new smells. Today I feel better, so after my nightly rubbing and fresh water I drop right off to sleep, but the FIREWORKS wake me up! Escape is at the back gate, I've gotten it open before...panic and run. I don't see very well but I just run. Out on the road...I try and run for the cars, everyone stops and gives me treats. I didn't even feel the hit because I was scared of the rockets. I went right away. Now Geo dosn't have to worry about my ailing anymore. I'll be jogging with her in spirit and visiting all my neighborhood friends.
GEO: As I drove franticly to find Carbon, I saw her laying on the road. Rushing to her side 3 young people in a truck came to my aid, she was gone and their kindness and help was much appreciated. Many times over the last 10 years Carbon has escaped, her ingenuity knew no bounds. Her health worried me and I know her passing saved her from pain and me from having to make a very sad decision.
