Arrival Story:
I can't remember too far back... but somehow I ended up at a shelter in PA. I've heard people say I came from the south (wherever that is) and had to be moved when hurricanes forced other critters like me into shelters. They called me Ginger, a corgi mix, at my new shelter. I guess I looked like a corgi, with my stocky body and a round belly full of pups. The shelter was nice place -- a farm, with lots of other critters for me to play with. I had my puppies, and my shelter mom made sure they all found good homes. Then it was my turn. One sunny fall morning, I was brought out of the barn to meet a nice couple. I was scared at first. But they pet me and rubbed my belly, so I figured they must be nice! The lady said, "Aw, she's cute!" They walked me all over the farm before they introduced me to a cute black and white Cardigan corgi named Frodo that they brought with them. I realized the couple must be Frodo's mom and dad. They took turns walking us both. (Frodo liked the farm too). After a while, my shelter mom had Frodo's mom sign some papers, and I got to go in Frodo's car with him! We drove about an hour. Frodo and I had the whole back of the car to ourselves. We were good and just sat quietly next to each other. Soon the car ride was over and we all got out. I wasn't sure where I was, but it seemed to be Frodo's house. Frodo's mom and dad let me explore outside and inside. They tried a few collars on me, found one that fit, and they kept taking me out and in, out and in. (I couldn't figure out how to tell them I was already housebroken and knew what to do.) Every time Frodo's mom took me outside, she kept calling me different words. I ignored most of them, including Ginger. Then she said the most beautiful word I had ever heard... Precious. I turned to look at her. She seemed surprised and said, "Alrighty then, your name must be Precious." It is?, I wondered. My new name is Precious? Now I started to catch on. Frodo's mom and dad kept calling me Precious, and they seemed thrilled every time I ran to them. That afternoon, Frodo"s mom and dad left for a little while. I got to stay with Frodo. We were tired so we both took a nap. When Frodo's mom and dad came home, they took off my collar for a few minutes. When they put it back on me, it had a new, shiny metal tag with some words on it, just like the one Frodo was wearing. None of my pals at the farm had one of these! Suddenly I knew what had happened. Precious was my new name. This was my new home. And Frodo's mom and dad were now MY mom and dad too. What an exciting day! I learned later that mom and dad wanted Frodo to have a buddy. He's a crazy boy with lots of energy and he LOVES other pups. Mom searched online every day, looking for a corgi or corgi mix that needed a home (and a buddy too). She saw my listing, but my photo didn't show up. My old shelter mom called me a sweet girl and said other nice things things about me. Mom applied to adopt me, sight unseen, and was approved. When my shelter mom finally sent over a photo, mom and dad weren't sure what I was, but they didn't think I was a corgi mix at all. Mom made an appointment to meet me anyway. Now I know why the first thing mom said was she's cute! I think she was pleasantly surprised... seeing as I AM terribly cute! Now they tell people I am a Dachshund/German Shepherd mix. That seems more like it to me, too. I am just the right size to be Frodo's buddy. He wants to play all the time. I don't mind, I like the attention -- especially when Frodo licks my ears. Plus mom and dad are always willing to rub my belly. I like being "Precious."
