Arrival Story:
My then-girlfriend worked at a vet clinic; one of their clients would often have technicians come over for grooms and toenail trims and other low-maintenance visits and Jen would sometimes assist. It's not that the client particularly needed in-home care; the clinic's happy to oblige for neighboring clients and clients are often happy to save the walk. Bonnie was known as something of a high spirited and somewhat unpredictable dog. Well-trained, and a generally calm dog, but not one who enjoyed strangers or having her feet handled. Her owner also assumed that she couldn't handle long walks, going to the bathroom anywhere but the back yard, or dog food other than the absolute cheapest variety. Unfortunately, the owner took quite ill in '04. Jen started walking Bonnie more and more. Bonnie proved to love long walks and not to be the least bit neurotic about finding a bathroom. Eventually, Jen was spending more time helping the owner around the house than walking Bonnie when she'd go over to walk her, and not long after that Bonnie needed a new owner. Both of us lived in places that allowed dogs, but neither of us had paid deposits for pets and we were both moving in a couple months. Luckily, we found a friend to do some long-term boarding. We moved in together -- all three of us -- in the fall of '05. Bonnie loves virtually any food you put in front of her, and most food that we put in front of us. I won't say which one of us occasionally sneaks her a bite of human food. She walks down to the beach as often as we can take her, which is over a mile each way and includes a good hill at the middle. She's been to the top of Mt Constitution and halfway up Rainier. She's definitely in favor of long walks. We're sorry to see her owner pass, but we couldn't imagine life at our place without her. The best part? People from the clinic come by and say "she's just a different dog now." Notwithstanding her ongoing lecture of the squirrels around here, you couldn't find a more relaxed, agreeable, responsive dog. Her first owner was a breeder and a trainer--and there's no better proof of the value of taking the time and effort to train your dog than Bonnie. She listens to us better than most of the dogs in the neighborhood listen to the only owners they've ever had. Unfortunately, when Jennifer and I parted in the summer of '07, I didn't get to keep Bonnie. I got the cats. It's a square deal, even though you can't really replace having a sweet dog around the house.

Bio:
It was also rumored that she was too well-disciplined ever to climb on any furniture. This is a lie. People who say that are lying. She climbs on any furniture that looks enticing for a nap.

Forums Motto:
The Sheriff of Cattown

Passing:
It's the hardest part of having pets, but making the right decision is the best thing you can do for them. In March of '08, Bonnie started coughing and stopped eating. It turned out that she had very aggressive cancer in her lungs, pressing against her heart. Jennifer had to have her put down. I never even got to see her before she went, and I miss her so much.
