Unfortunately the poor little thing turned out to be very ill (kidney failure). When it became clear that we would have to make a humane decision, I started visiting the shelters again. One week after we had to put Maggie down, we were at the Humane Society, and little Sammie had just been surrendered to them. I walked out with him that same afternoon.
