...more than anything in the world. I hope you're doing well and are as happy as I remember. I would give my right arm to have you with me again. Stupid divorce >.

Pooping like a normal dog again!

Yippee! Bowie seems to be back to normal in the GI department. We had some odd test results, so there will be xrays next weekend to double-check that nothing nasty is growing inside her. Cross all paws for her, and thanks again to all of my wonderful friends! XOXO

Still no food, vet tomorrow at noon

I's been 36 hours and she still has very runny diarrhea that is brown. She'd been drinking water every four hours or so with a bit of chicken broth in it to get her fluids. She is also still getting the Famotidine twice a day, 2.5 mg, which is what the vet sent us home with last time this happened. I'm wondering if I need to wait until the diarrhea is completely gone, or can I start feeding her some bland foods now? She is back to her old normal self, attitude-wise, but not digestion-wise :(

Bowie is improving and going to the vet this weekend for a- full interior exam

First of all, I have to say thank you so much to all of my good friends who were able to quickly get me advice, help, and went so far above and beyond anything that anyone has ever done for me (well, for Bowie) that I feel so blessed. I don't know how I will ever be able to pay you back, literally or figuratively. Thank you a million times.

Bowie still has the diarrhea, but is getting the Famotidine and water, along with a little chicken broth until everything passes through her. I'm hoping everything will firm up and she can finally get some rest by tomorrow. She's still passing fluids of different colors and textures every couple of hours, but seems to be in better spirits this evening.

Since this is the second occurrence of this same illness within two months, she's going in to see her regular vet tomorrow if the diarrhea hasn't cleared, or Saturday, which would be a better day, since we won't be limited by the time constraints of her other appointments. She's been seeing Bowie for over five years now and knows every little bump on her.

Thanks to my generous and wonderful friends, I am going to be able to have her properly examined internally, head to toe, to see why Bowie is suddenly getting such severe digestive ailments when she has never had a problem in the past (knock on wood). She's been so healthy for the last few years and in the past - even just a few moths ago - she would literally chew through my purse to get things like protein bars, bananas, and even cough drops and it never even phased her. She's eaten some things that really should have made her sick - three large Texas Taffy, two full size Balance Bars, a couple of bananas, to name just a few, and has never vomited, had diarrhea, or any other stomach problems, so this is not normal. She'll have xrays for sure, and probably sonogram or any other things my vet suggests to see if there is something awry inside her that we can’t see.

Once again, I have to thank all of you again for your help - you most likely have just saved Bowie's life. I was able to help her today so she didn't get worse, and this weekend I will be able to afford the diagnostics she needs to determine if there is anything more going on inside of her. I love you guys, and I know you all understand how I feel, since we all have four legged family members that, like any other children, we all want the best for. You are all such a great family to Bowie and I, and I appreciate you all more than you will ever know. Thanks again!

As most of you know, Bowie ate 1/2 of a 12 inch Redbarn bullystick on the 8th of November and ended up at the vet for three days for gastroenteritis and bloody diarrhea. The vet said if she ever did something like that again to give her 5mg of a Pepcid, since it is Famotidine, which is what they were giving her along with IV fluids and a bland diet.

Yesterday at about 10 am she started to have the diarrhea again, which progressively became more & more runny, virtually just dark spots all over. I have no idea what she ate, she hasn’t had any new treats or food, and hasn’t gotten into anything, as she has in the past. I gave her a Pepcid with dinner at 5pm last night, as well as put some milk in a bowl of water to make sure she is drinking and not getting dehydrated again.

I’ve been up all night watching her and gave her another Pepcid with breakfast at 4:30 am. She’s now had diarrhea at 12:30 am, 2:30 am, 5:30 am and now 7:30 am. Luckily, she gets most of it on potty pads I have everywhere. The problem is that her diarrhea is only getting worse - more watery - and now one of the pads I just picked up at 7:30 am is getting bloody again like her last vet visit. It filled up two pads, one with regular runny spots, but the other has about 7 two to four inch drops of almost all clearish, lightly bloody drops. She has also urinated twice in that time, both just clear, since the water with milk seems to have gone right through her.

Does anyone have any advice or know of anything I can do to help stop the diarrhea? I’m home alone with her, don’t have any medicines in the house, and don’t have a car or any way to go get her anything.

Everything says that once you see blood, get them to a vet, but it is completely impossible for me to do because, like many people right now, I am beyond broke. I have been trying to Ebay things like crazy, but since it’s the holidays, no one is buying. I am not asking for money under any circumstances, I just need to know if anyone has any advice? Anything I can do to help her with regular household goods? I feel terrible and hate to see her like this - she’s not feeling good and it’s obvious. Should I just keep trying to keep her hydrated and wait and see if the diarrhea goes away?

Any help or advice you can give me right now would be greatly appreciated!

VPI - the nightmare HMO of Pet Insurance!

My dog has been covered by VPI since she came to us at 8 weeks old. Her coverage has been the "SUPERIOR PLAN, CANCER ENDORSEMENT, WELLCARE CORE COVERAGE" - the highest available. Because she had bordatella, they automatically said she will not be covered for ANY respiratory illnesses during her life. None. Not even UNRELATED respiratory illness.

We chose the highest amount of coverage, which is supposed to include wellness exams, vaccinations and any medications (including flea and worms preventatives) she receives. Unfortunately, what they consider a regular wellness exam charge and what a real vet charges are about 500% different. They pay $25 for a complete wellness exam, which includes a checkup and vaccines and actually costs closer to $150.

They have also decided not to cover the medication she is prescribed and costs $203.10/month - and they will give me no reason for that. I have also yet to be reimbursed for any preventative flea/worm medications, although I have sent them numerous receipts and signed forms from my vet.

I have appealed many claims as well as called customer service numerous times, and every time I call each representative tells me something different. They are obviously not training their phone staff and you'll never get the same answer twice.

Another major problem I have is that the monthly premium goes up at least 20% a year, although I rarely file any claims except for wellness and medications. So far, over the 4 years, we have paid $1775.00 in premiums, put in for $2935.50 in VALID claims according to all schedules and have only been reimbursed $888.23. See a problem there? We've paid twice the amount in premiums as they have paid in claims (Premiums $1775-Reimbursed $888 = $887 overpayment.) Needless to say, since there are so many new companies out there offering so much more, we are shopping for new insurance.

VPI is the HMO of Pet Insurance companies - they only pay the LEAST amount they have to and they look for every little thing to get out of paying.

They recently gave customers an online area to view previous claims, which was a really dumb thing on their part. It shows exactly how little they pay. Here are some average claims we have made:

Date: 9/12/07 - Amount: $203.10 - Reimbursement: $4.98, 10/4/07

Date: 8/16/07 - Amount: $203.10 - Reimbursement: $0, 9/6/07

Date: 2/8/07 - Amount: $134.20 - Reimbursement: $36.90, 3/21/07 (6 weeks!!!)

Date: 5/7/06 - Amount $435.20 - Reimbursement: $0, 6/27/07 (Another 6 weeks)

Date: 5/15/06 - Amount $597.20 - Reimbursement: $261.36, 7/6/06 (Seeing a pattern? Over 6 weeks)

Date: 5/17/06 - Amount: $156.60 - Reimbursement: $45.75, 7/14/06

Date: 2/24/05 - Amount: $175.50 - Reimbursement: $0, 3/16/05

Date: 1/31/05 - Amount: $129.50 - Reimbursement: $71.65, 2/15/05

I could keep going, but I think you see the picture. Just like an HMO - pay the least amount you can and make the most amount of money. They really do not care about your pet's health - they care about their bottom line profits. If this were a human insurance company they would have been sued numerous times or shut down by now.

The best "Explanation" I get on a lot of forms from them is: "Claim denied because an itemized receipt was not submitted with the claim or itemized receipt is unreadable. Information must be submitted within 180 days of the treatment date or 60 days from the date of this denial, whichever is greater." Now, after 4 years, I know how to submit a claim and I know how to have it itemized and typed, so this excuse is completely bogus. Even after three re-submissions and a call from my vet, they still denied the claim for the above reason.

Bowie...hoping Mom can find me better, more reliable pet insurance soon!

We haven't been around much. My kitty sister Morticia was diasgnosed a couple months ago with cancer and Mom and Dad have been taking her to the vet every weekend for tumor draining and pain meds. It's been a few months. It is an inoperable so all they can do is spoil her. Not much Bowie time lately, but Morticia is Queen of our house and always will be. She won't make it to see 2008, so all of us are pretty sad.

It's been a tough time here in our household. My kitty sister, Morticia, was diagnosed with vaccine related fibrosarcoma last month and it's incurable. We don't know how much time we have until the cancer takes her. It's unfortunate that something meant to help her - a rabies vaccination - has actually caused her to contract an awful case of cancer. This week my other kitty buddy, Gomez, came down with FUS. He's been at the vet since Monday and won't be returning home until Thursday. His urinary system was completely blocked by crystals. Unfortunately, since he came from the SPCA, we have no idea what his life was like before he came to us and the food he was fed to cause this. The sad fact is that it usually is a lifelong problem once they get it once. My poor kitties. I'm going to miss Morty :(
