high tide and green carcasses or death in the morning

Just got back from Asilomar Beach. No other dogs this morning, but I found plenty to keep busy with. There were the birds, of course. There are always the birds. But Dog does not live by bird alone.

This morning, Jima, I finally found that dead sea lion I mentioned so many, many entries ago. I didn’t really get to play with it much though, because the biped was hot on my heels at that point—“Off! Leave it! Let’s go!” [How did the sons of Wolves ever come to be subservient to the sons of Monkeys? It just ain’t right. But I digress.]

A little later, after I had kicked sand in the biped’s face and sped off down the beach a few hundred yards, I came across the tantalizing and very far gone carcass of a bobcat, of all things. You don’t see bobcat carcasses every day, not even in Pacific Grove.

Now, if I were a more reflective sort of dog, I might have been contemplating my own mortality at that point. But I’m not. So I wasn't. Instead, I rolled around in the lovely cat carcass until the biped finally caught up. He took it fairly well, though I expect I'm in for a bath as soon as the sun is well up and the fog has burned off. Well worth it.

On a related matter: I’m a bit worried about the biped’s exercise regime. This business of taking me to the beach instead of the woods and fields is fine with me. I get plenty of exercise either way. But you just can’t get the biped to chase a bird. So the beach is just a pleasant but not very invigorating stroll for him. Whereas, he’s as willing as I am to chase the top of a hill. Maybe we’ll give it another week or two, then see if the ticks have gone north for the summer.

Keep those cards and letter coming,

Dexter

Later that same morning: I was right about the bath. Which is OK. I'm not a huge fan of bathing, but as long as its kept to the continental standard of once every couple of weeks, I don't mind too much. And on the bright side, it involves removing my collar and tags, which do not get put back on until I'm thoroughly dry. So I get an hour or so of running around the yard in stealth mode--you can't hear me coming.
