I have been tagged by my pals Zeke and Molly

Here are the rules of the game!

Each player starts with seven random facts about themselves. Dogs who are tagged, need to post in their Diary the rules & their 7 pawsome facts. Then choose 7 dogs to tag and list their names. Don’t forget to bark them a pmail that they have been tagged and to read your Diary, or, send them a fun Rosette announcing they've been Tagged!

1. I love to go to Child Haven where Mom and I are a dog therapy team. I love the kids and they love on me!
2. I love to have playdates at the dog park. I love to see the pet parents almost as much as the other doggies!
3. I love to spend time in the garden with Mom. I follow her around and hang out in the shady spots.
4. I love treats, Three Dog bakery cookies, duck chewies, yum yum yum. I will be soooo good and obey Mom's every word for a treat.
5. I like doing agility -- I know -- surprise! I really love the tunnels, the chute, the dog walk and the A-frame.
6. I don't really like car rides as I was in a crash with Mom when I was but a pup but I like to go places so what's a girl to do?
7. I love my brother, Chance. He is fun and funny. Lots of energy and gets me to run and play. We have a great time together.

I'm tagging...

1. Gidget
2. Jackpot
3. Gibbon
4. Sarge
5. Bow-wow
6. Tomy
7. Sedona

This is fun!

Yesterday was the 2nd annual Begg Hunt at Three Dog Bakery. It is one of my favorite events of the year. You sniff out eggs and they have treats inside. It was a lot of fun -- lots of doggies there this year! We get good treats and food there and get to sniff all of our friends. So much fun!

Intro to Agility

Mom and I started something new. We both need to lose our winter weight. Mom says we both have too much junk in our trunk? We are taking an intro to agility class at Smarty Paws. The first class was pretty fun and easy. I hopped over bars on the ground. Yeah, yeah -- over, over, over -- got it! I learned to weave between these bars -- weave, weave, weave. I got better and faster at the with practice. Weird, but fun. I love the tunnel -- what dog doesn't? I come out the other end and there's mom! The only thing I am not too sure about is walking on that board. I don't get it. Maybe when it is in the air? Mom and I both had fun and can't wait till next week!

On St. Patty's Day Saturday we attended a fun party thrown by Sniffany & Co. on West Sahara. We met the nicest, coolest photographer! Her name is C. Renee and her website is www.creneephotography.com. She took lots of pictures of us and we will get 1 in a couple of weeks. She does this cool thing with photos -- she puts the photos on canvas and they look like a work of art -- so awesome!

WENT ON MY FIRST GROUP HIKE

Gosh, so much as been happening lately that I almost forgot to tell you that Mom & I went on a group hike last Sunday.

The nice ladies who wrote besk hikes with dog Las Vegas & Beoynd, Kimberly Lewis and Paula Jacoby-Garrett. We hiked First Creek just past the Red Rock Canyon park. It was a 2-mile hike with some rocks. We got to see this cool pool all hidden away back there and a little waterfall. Very nice.

There were about 30 dogs and their parents on the hike. Everyone was really nice. We had a treat and played when we got to the water. One doggie, Camy, Jennifer's dog went in that cold water and fetched a stick over and over. Brrrrr! I am not sure about that cold water!

I hiked way better than my mom thought I would. We are going to go again when they hike to St. Thomas at Lake Mead on March 10. There's a hike every month. What fun!

Mom's notes from meeting about Lied Shelter

My mom was gone all afternoon yesterday and here's what she learned.

Animal Control/Humane/Rescue
Focus Group

Meeting Highlights

General info:

There were at least a dozen rescue groups in attendance along with Nevada SPCA, Heaven Can Wait, Best Friends from Southern Utah, and Nevada Voters for Animals along with a few vet techs and private citizens.

The County and cities has representatives there along with representatives of Animal Control from each of the 3 jurisdictions (Clark County, City of Las Vegas and City of North Las Vegas)

All the major TV stations had camera crews and reporters in attendance as well.

A trained facilitator who works for Clark County facilitated the meeting. He has no vested interest in the outcome of this crisis.

The meeting had a agenda which included introductions from everyone present, an explanation of the regional alignment for animal control and sheltering, a lengthy discussion of issues and concerns and a solution development session.

Animal control/Lied handed out an extensive packet of emergency recommendations that they are implementing since the crisis.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – PLEASE RETAIN

Each of the jurisdictions has designated an administrative and an operational point person for us to contact.

Clark County

Administrative = Jeff Wells, 455-3530
Operations = Joe Boteilho, 455-8178

City of Las Vegas

Administrative = Tim Shattler, 229-6617
Operations= Floyd Womble, 229-2401

City of North Las Vegas

Administrative = Al Nyola, 633-1754
Operations = Dale Smock, 633-2143
There was a group sign in list of all attendees so that we can receive e-mail notifications of future meetings. I would like to suggest that those who were unable to attend contact their jurisdictions Administrative point person and ask to be added to the contact list.

There was some discussion that Lied had once again lost the current list of contacts for all the rescue groups. We need to get a list to them and perhaps hand deliver it to the operations contacts.

A concern was immediately raised about the work of this group versus the work of the Clark County Animal Advisory Board which has been working for over 2 decades. Members of that group encouraged everyone concerned with animal welfare to attend their next meeting which is April 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Paradise Park, on McLeod north of Tropicana.

The meeting lasted for 3 ½ hours so I am going to provide a synopsis of the highlights in no particular order.

1. We need a low/no cost spay/neuter clinic for our valley. Current wait times for an appointment at Lied are 2-3 months which is unacceptable.
2. We need to maintain an up-to-date list of all the rescue groups and ensure that Lied has it and uses it.
3. We need to use rescue groups as a resource and allow them to pull all dogs in their breed, regardless of age or adoptability.
4. Lied employees need to be trained on proper procedures, policy, breed recognition, etc.
5. More animal control officers are needed to enforce backyard breeders, pet shops, dog sales listed in the newspaper and on the internet.
6. Lied needs more vets to do its job properly, to assess incoming animals, care for sick animals and perform spay/neuter. There is 1 vet there 5 days a week and 1 vet who works 2 days a week, the equivalent of 1 full-time vet. Also our entire community is in need of qualified vet techs.
7. Ordinances among the 3 jurisdictions must be uniform.
8. The contract that the 3 jurisdictions have with Lied must be uniform.
9. Trust must be rebuilt by Lied with the rescue groups and the public.
10. Microchips must be checked for immediately on all incoming animals. Lied needs more scanners.
11. Animal identification tag machines need to be more readily available to dog events, malls, etc.
12. Partnering among all interested parties including rescues, shelters, vets, dog trainers, groomers, dog sitters, etc. is essential. We all need to work to educate the public about choosing the right pet as well as spay/neuter.
13. Adoption fees need to be reviewed. Fees went up from $13 to $150. The fees charges to rescue groups should also be reviewed for unadoptable vs adoptable dogs.
14. We must keep our elected officials as well as the media engaged in our efforts.
15. Lied needs a specified coordinator to work with the rescue groups.
16. The website must be improved as to timeliness and accuracy.

Important next steps:

1. The City of Las Vegas’ contract with Lied expired in October 2006 and is currently in negotiation. Karen Coyle with the city stated that the information shared at the meeting will be reviewed and incorporated into the contract as much as possible.
2. The County and the City of North Las Vegas plan to amend their contracts to be uniform with Las Vegas’ new contract as soon as it is finalized.
3. The City of Las Vegas will look into the Lied website issues immediately.
4. A new director of Lied has been hired and will be announced soon.

My new bro

As many of you know, my mom and I have worked with Sleepover Rover for just over a year now. So I am used to go and visiting new hosts and their hosts. And I love hosting dogs in our home.

So dogs come and go. Well last Thursday this thin lil guy came home with my mom. She introduced him as my new brother, Chance. I didn't know what that meant. But he was nice.

Then he tried marking all the furniture and my stuff, and even the cats trees and litter box. And then he tried to hump me. Well, mom taught him some manners. Now we hang out all day and play. We nap and lay back to back. He's an okay guy.

I am getting the idea that a brother doesn't go home like a guest dog. I guess that's okay with me.

My mommy is sad about the animals at the shelter

My mommy has been said all weekend. She talked with friends about a place called Lied that is a shelter for animals. My brother Buddy came from there. My sisters Ella and Stormy were spared from having to go there.

She said that many doggies and kitties got sick and it was avoidable. Many had to be put to sleep to go to the Rainbow Bridge too soon.

She is going to a candlelight vigil tomorrow night to remember those animals who had to go to the Bridge and to pray for those rescued but who are still sick.

I am so happy the heat is gone for another year. It means that there is so much fun stuff to get out and do again. And I am a social animal! I love to meet other dogs and their parents. It is the best!

We went to Strut Your Mutt! Wow! So much to see and sniff! Mom found a lot of fun things and I brought home a bag overflowing with goodies. So many treats it was like Halloween for doggies!

It was so nice to see our friends and make new ones. Just love this town!!

One happy schnauzer
