Likes:
Chief is a survivalist - he has enough treats, food, and toys buried to carry us through Y3K .

Pet-Peeves:
Although he likes the process that allows ticks to become attached - he certainly hates the process of getting the ticks off! YOWTCH!

Favorite Toy:
Chief is happy to play with just about anything - from driveway rocks to empty plastic soda bottles. His very favorite is a Frisbee

Favorite Food:
Chief loves bit o honey candy. It's funny to watch him chew it up.

Favorite Walk:
Anywhere as long as he can run ahead - come back - jump on you - run ahead - come back - repeat 1000 times

Best Tricks:
Catching things in his mouth. Talking back (sassy dog), and putting the deathgrip on Herbie without actually hurting him.

Arrival Story:
Chief was the last puppy left in his litter. He's the sweetest natured dog and has always been careful and big brotherly toward Herbie his little welsh terrier brother.

Bio:
Chief was under Mom's care for the first few months (for the potty training and basic training) - and then he graduated to Camp Herbie and went to stay with Dad in Arkansas. He loves to run the woods, and bring back turtles to play with. He'll chew on them and play with them all day long - but never kill them. He loves to go out on the lake in the boat. When down at the dock with Dad - he made Dad SOoo proud when he very carefully brought a nice fishing lure that someone had lost to him. We're still not sure how he did it without getting hooked! But bottom line is - we're hooked on Chief. He's the 5th airedale we've owned. He is the first one we've had that MOANS and groans - he sounds like an old man. He does it when he's sleeping, and he'll do it if you rub his ears.

Letters From Camp Herbie

A Big Snake Bit Him - In The Fanny

Dear Mom,
It's hot here at Camp. I mostly run around in the wee wee hours of the morning (you know when I get Dad up cause I have to wee wee at 4:30 am?)
No one is up then. I have to bark and bark and bark to wake stuff up!

I'm getting good at frisbee now. Dad says I need to quit chewing on it though or there won't be anything left to throw. Maybe you can bring a new one when you come to visit?

Dad's friend John came by yesterday and brought him some long green things. He put them on the picnic table. I really really really wanted to know what they were - but Dad said "NO - leave them alone." when I tried to smell them. Dad went in the garage, and nobody said "No" when I tried to smell them again. Interesting, so I carried them over in the shade to examine them more closely later. I knew I wasn't going to get to all of them, so I buried one (he called it a cucumber). I guess just because Dad isn't there to SAY "NO" doesn't mean it isn't still "NO" He didn't get real mad at me, but he's still looking for that cucumber. I'm saving it for you though, Mom!

What's Herbie doing? He didn't REALLY go on a roller coaster did he? No FAIR! I want to go too!

Dad's been letting me stay in the cabin by myself a little bit without putting me in 'the box'. It's a lot cooler in there, and my water doesn't get hot. I haven't tasted it good yet, but that leather couch sure looks yummy.

I'm counting down the days til you get here Mom, only 10 more!
What are you getting Herbie for his birthday on the 3rd? Maybe I'll give him that cucumber ......

love,
Chief

Dear Mom,
I just don't get it. Dad gets on that machine and digs and digs in the dirt.
I dig one little hole and my dad gets mad, says "you're too dirty to come in the house!" Man it's a nice hole, Mom. It's right by the patio - in the shade.
I loved that hole. Dad filled it in yesterday. *sniff* I miss my Mom *howl*

Love, Chief

Dear Mom,
When are you coming to visit? Dad has been so busy he isn't paying much attention to me. We did go for a walk in the woods yesterday, but he won't go out there for very long, not since he saw all those copperheads.
I found a terrapin in the woods and brought it home with me. I played with it for a long time. It mostly slept though. It's still sleeping. There are a lot of buzzers flying around it trying to wake it up to play too. I don't know what it has in that shell with it, but it sure is smelling funny. I rolled around on it and went over to Dad to see if he could tell what the smell was. He got all 'oh get away' and pushed me away. He found my terrapin and picked it up with a poopscoop stick thing and took it down to the lake. It went way way down. I always thought terrapins could swim. I guess I need to fi nd another one.
What has Herbie been doing? I heard he ran after a car today and you swatted him. Wish I could have been there for that.
Tell Grandma thanks for sending the new frisbee. Will you play with me when you come down again?
Love,
Chief
