Arrival Story:
Shortly after 9/11 my parents came out from Nebraska for a visit. When I got to the airport, my dad was waiting by the baggage claim at the oakland airport. My mom was behind him, ringed by a crowd of people, with a huge (and slightly unhinged) grin on her face. In her arms was a tiny chihuahua puppy. "Happy birthday!" she called out and held up the dog. She'd found her in a pet store the day before and--having poor impulse control, as well as 5 chihuahuas of her own--she decided to bring her to me. The crowd waiting behind her was most of the passengers from their flight, including the pilot--all eager to see my reaction to the new dog. That night, at a dinner party at Betsy's house, Gus the Jack Russell caught one whiff and fell snout over tail in love. But really, I got there first, and now she's Stella, my truest heart.
