Arrival Story:
We were on our way to Thanksgiving dinner with my mother-in-law when we stopped at a pet store for cat food. Chinook was in the last glassed-in unit. I set eyes on him and fell in love. We adopted him, drove another hour, had Thanksgiving dinner, drove back and picked him up, and our first 1.5 hours with him was in the truck on the drive home.

When Chinook came home, we were excited. We bought a house last year, and the selection was perfect because our landing has doors on it to the basement and to the upstairs. Chinook had escaped during his stay in the pet store and had a rabbit feast, so we were worried about him interacting with our cats, but huskies are my dream dogs, so I was determined to make this work.

Of course, Chinook was determined to push the boundaries and see if he could get upstairs. He managed to dart through the door and down the hallway, into the living room. Buttons was up on the back of a chair by then, skirting around the room by jumping to the couch, while Chinook looked like a dog on a treadmill. He couldn't get any traction on the hardwood floor. I grabbed him and put him in the bathroom, anxious to make sure Buttons and Rascal were both okay. They were, and I returned to the bathroom. I could hear Chinook jumping against the door and had secured the cats in another room. I turned the handle and pushed - nothing. While jumping against the door, Chinook had pushed the slide lock across (did I mention we bought an old house?) and the door couldn't be unlocked from the outside. There was also no way I could get into the window.

All I can say is that the tv cops make body-checking a door open look a lot easier than it actually is! But the incident inspired an idea for a story, which was published here: http://www.cynicmag.com/holidaycheer.asp?articleid=382 - although the dog story is partially true, the rest of the story is fiction!

Well, that was the first of the major cat/dog encounters! Chinook has taken a few claws on the nose, and if I walk upstairs and jingle my keys the cats think it's him and go running!
