Arrival Story:
Martha was surrendered at the Michigan Humane Society's Detroit shelter. I am a longtime volunteer there and I just happened to mention to one of the evaluators that my husband and I had decided to adopt a dog and I had researched various small breeds and decided that a Chihuahua would suit us well. The evaluator, Jan, who is also a dear friend and is married to Mark Ramos, who is an "Animal Cop" on the TV series on Animal Planet, got a gleam in her eye and silently led me back to OB-2, one of the wards for owner-surrendered small dogs. There in the cage was my Martha!! She went home with me that day as a "foster" pet to see if she needed socialization, etc. She was SO scared in the shelter. It was hard to see her true personality. She immediately fit right into our family and we officially adopted her the next day! Her adopted name (name she came with) was Sugar. She didn't seem to know her name, so we decided to rename her. We didn't know what kind of life she'd had prior to be turned in so we thought it would be good for her to start fresh. We went through choice after choice of possible names, including all the Mexican and Spanish words you could think of. And then I thought about famous people who I admire and Martha Stewart immediately popped into my head. Martha seemed like the perfect name for her and it still is!! We have fostered a couple of male dogs and have temporarily named them Stewart, of course!

Bio:
Martha is our only dog. She rules the roost and keeps the cats in line, even though they are all bigger than her. She breaks up any "fights" they might start to have. Her favorite "duty" is to inspect their food bowls when they are done and helps them all be members of the "clean bowl club." (She does this when mom isn't looking or is distracted, of course.)
