Arrival Story:
One year after the passing of my dog, a dear friend said "stop mourning and go adopt a new dog. Here's a present of $100.00 to pay for the train fare to North Shore Animal League and make a donation to the shelter". The adoption specialist at the shelter asked if I had a particular breed in mind. I always wanted a Westie but didn't think they would have one. Luckily for me they did! The dog didn't seem very interested in me and had an empty look in his eyes. I was informed that he had been abused and would need time to get used to a new owner. As soon as we left the shelter this little Westie morphed into a happy playful boy and once on the train heading home, jumped into my lap, licked my face as if to say, thanks for rescuing me, and cuddled up in my arms to sleep. I fell completely in love with him at that moment and he has been the very best part of my life ever since. Jamie loves living in the city, visiting the neighborhood shopkeepers and hanging out with the building Super. Four years later a second Westie, Emma, joined our family. They are very close, devoted chums and enjoy knocking the sense out of each other.

Bio:
January of 2006 marked the tenth anniversary of Jamie's adoption. At the age of 11 he is still a handsome little guy but suffers from serious heart disease and Westie lung disease. He can no longer run around and play soccer in the lobby of our apartment building, really feels the weather and is easily exhausted. He must take life slowly now but enjoys getting out in his doggie stroller, especially since his partner Emma can't fit in it at the same time. She has to walk and that makes riding all the sweeter. Tourists take his picture while in it and tell me I am nuts to push a dog around Manhattan in a stroller (silly tourists!). In the summer of 2005, Jamie and Emma went to the first Mets Dog Night at Shea Stadium dressed as their favorite player, Pedro Martinez, complete with baseball caps and Pedro wigs! They got their picture in the NY Post! The Mets had a comeback win in extra innings and Jamie hopes to do the same and hang around long enough to watch his team win another championship. March 29, 2006 - Jamie lost his battle with cancer, heart and lung disease this afternoon. He was active and happy until a week before his death so the end came quickly. I was with him at the vet to hold him and kiss his nose and tell him that he, along with Emma, is the very best part of my life and I would not have made it through the last ten years without him. Tonight I am overwhelmed with grief and sadness for the loss of my little boy and in awe of his ability to fight it out to the end. The luckiest day of my life was in January of 1996 when I walked into North Shore Animal League and found my Jamie. I love you forever my sweet, little lamb. Mommy and Emma will miss you always. All my love forever and ever, Mommy.
