Is there anything else but peanut butter?

Favorite Walk:
Much like my brother Opie sleeping is a favorite pasttime, however when I have bursts of energy I enjoy making my mom and dad throw my tennis ball for me in my backyard over and over and over well you know how it is!

Best Tricks:
playing "soccer" I am an excellent blocker and a mid air tennis ball catcher. Academically speaking (my mom is a teacher) I have been told I am a very intelligent dog...even compared to some of the kids at school.....wait is that a compliment?!

Arrival Story:
We had never considered ourselves dog people. We had been under the control of 2 cats for several years (Our Levi 14 and ChiChi 13 - they both passed last year as well as our Winston) but we had been looking at puppies. We saw Dexter at the fleamarket (yes I said fleamarket, we didn't know better now it is only from rescue!) and it was love at first sight. Dexter got the best of everything just like every oldest child. Doggy day care 3 times a week, bottled water etc... Dexter did go way past the "acceptable" sheltie size although he is an AKC registered dog (Hardbarger's Prancing Prince Dexter) but that never mattered to us. Dexter was our son and was and will always be treated as such. And if I had to admit it...he is my favorite..shhhhh! As for his high level of intelligence....shelties are smart dogs.....but we raised Dexter from 14 weeks to 1 &1/2 years of age by himself and talked to him and treated him like a person. Dexter is intuitive and understands our conversations. We resorted to spelling out words at one time but he always learned the words and any new words we would try out and he has remembered these for 10 years. He has been able to interpret our body language for quite some time as well. He also has the uncanny ability to seem to speak as though he is human. He can say momma and oooo no and daddy. He senses our emotions and actions as well. He is my personal favorite although I love all of my babies equally. Dexter also prefers my company and is most inclined to be with and obey mom much to his dad's chagrin :) He is a faithful and loyal companion.

Bio:
A sheltie was what we had in mind, being smaller and a good size for a house dog or at least for the size of our house dog. We didn't know about seeing the parents etc. We did purchase him from a fleamarket but we were extremely lucky. The fleamarket has since banned the selling of any animal (thank goodness). It is always a buyer beware with any animal but I consider Dexter our first rescue. In hindsight we saved from what was probably a disastrous life and maybe even being rehomed! Horrors....we came along just in time! And he rescued us at just the right moment!

Since I am the oldest.....


Our worse day

Today was our worse day since 2010....we had to put our first born baby to sleep.....to say our hearts are broken would be an understatement...
He was our very first puppy the one who started us on the path we are on now 13 years later with a family of 11 dogs...now 10...all from assorted walks of life, some that just need to stay for camp at Aunt Linda's, and some that have horrible rescue stories and will be with us forever.

Dexter was our heart and soul and spoiled rotten and never complained when we brought in another new dog. He was just our bepper baby and our hearts and lives will so empty with out him...it will just never be the same.

We love you Dexter always and forever

I'm Dexter and I am the oldest of this pack and you would think my opinion would count for something.....but apparently not.
I told my mom NO MORE! No questions asked, no comments, no nothing. Well in walked Percy anyway in Sept. Mom said he would be the last but I saw that look in her eyes...I know her. Any breaking heart story and she gives in.
Sure enough last Friday here comes broken heart story number 5.
So now we have a new brother, Gilbert, he, at least is a pure breed sheltie. (My mom says I am a snob) He is a nice enough guy, not nuts like that Percy.
When I had my special time with mom this week she said she promised he is the last one. This time I believed her because this time she said 7 was enough, and she has never said that before.
They still could have asked me first.
