Arrival Story:
Ban-cha is our second dog. We got her about six months after Mugi-cha. She actually came from a horrible breeder near Chicago who bred a rescued dog with one of their dogs and must have crossed bloodlines. Ban-cha's parents' weigh around 70 pounds, but she weighs 45. After we brought her home at about a year old, we found that she had both a bad case of ear mites and heart worms. She had to have three arsenic shots right after we got her and then three the next summer in order to kill the heartworms. She probably wouldn't be alive if we hadn't found her, so we think of her as a "rescue". Her name means "Green Tea" in Japanese, but it also has the meaning of the leftover leaves after the a tea producer has gathered all the high quality tea to sell at a high price. Ban-cha (the tea) is sold to ordinary people at an ordinary price. My husband claims that this was not the meaning intended, but Japanese people almost always laugh when we explain that our first dog is named "Mugi-cha" and our second dog is named "Ban-cha". We wouldn't trade her for all of the tea in the world.

Bio:
One summer, our friends' beagle, Sparky stayed with us for five weeks. He was very cute, but was also food agressive. This meant that when Mugi or Ban-cha approached to sniff a bag of groceries that we had just brought home, Sparky would cut them off and growl at them or attack them. But, other than that, the dogs really got along splendidly. Our dogs know well enough not to take food off of coffee tables or out of bags. I came home, put my bike bag down on the floor and went to the gym, when I came back, I realized that someone had gone into my bag and eaten a large Hershey Symphony Bar. We assumed that it was Sparky, but after 3 doses of hydrogen peroxide, he looked completely content sitting in front of a flower bed. So, I started giving some to the other dogs. Ban-cha was the saddest because she immediately threw up her dinner. But, she didn't throw up any chocolate. Mugi became obstinate after the first dosage and I had to pry open her mouth and then she would close her throat and the liquid would run out along the sides of her face. I kept dosing Sparky, but he seemed fine. Finally, I gave him a substantilly larger dose and he produced a foamy pile of chocolate and peroxide. Half a minute later, he was trying to dine on what was left. The dogs still like Sparky a lot. In fact, Ban-cha thinks of Sparky as one of her best friends. When he meets her, he tries to be dominant, but then quickly falls into line and they have a great time hanging out.
