My husband and I had just recently moved into our home-- before that, we had lived in an apartment with our two rescued kitties. My husband knew I had always longed for a yard, so we could adopt dogs. (Shortly after my husband and I married, my 17 year old flat coat retriever, Abby, passed away.) Near Valentine's day, my husband told me he wanted to adopt two puppies as a Valentine's gift. He had researched online and discovered a local shelter had a mama dog and her 11 pups that were abandoned at the local landfill just before Christmas. We excitedly went that Saturday to the shelter and immediately fell in love with the tiny German Pinscher/Lab mixes. We picked out Sable because she was so sweet to her siblings and she looked like a Lab, and her sister Sugar because she was friendly and she had the Pinscher markings.

Sable Dable, you're such a goofy, sweet puppy. I should have known when I looked back in that shelter pen and saw you're little self splayed in the middle of the food bowl.
You are such a happy, friendly dog, that no matter what, you always look like you are smiling. You and Sugar are such close sisters, y'all spend all your day play fighting or snoozing in the sun.
In all my life, I have rescued so many poor thrown out animals. And, I remember that Valentine's day, when we got to the shelter, convinced we were taking home two border collie pups. To our surprise, the pups were adopted out, but there y'all were. A whole litter of half lab, half pinschers born to a mom who was thrown out at the dump somewhere around Christmas. I am so happy that those other pups were always adopted, because that led us to you and Sugar.
I hope that I can offer you and Sugar and Boo and Fet a good life, a life that you may not have had.
