Rascal was taken from us this morning, right before our eyes he was snapped up by one of two coyotes who had invaded the shelter of our back yard. Mercifully in much the same way as Rascal at times play-dispatched one of his small toys, he was himself given a coup de grace.

I hesitate to share such bad news in a warm and pet-loving place like this, but the information may be useful to other owners of small dogs who also share their community with coyotes.

We always kept an eye on Rascal, and today was not an exception. We have a solid masonry wall that ranges over 4 ft, and sometimes 5ft completely around our yard. If you hold the belief that a coyote wont leap over something he can't and never has seen the other side of, think again. Two coyotes leaped over our wall from the outside and into a blind landing and went for him, one snapping him up with hardly a loss of stride, and then easily left the yard over the wall at it's highest point with all 6 pounds of Rascal. Our presence, the chase we gave, and the noise we made was not a deterrent to these marauders

Today is a low point for us as Rascal had indelibly written himself into our lives and plans. We are grateful for the time we had with him and wish it had only been much longer and without a violent end. Perhaps most of all we will miss his welcome home; he always greeted us with such love and affection.
