Rita's Birthday!

Rita is 9 today, and so are her 9 brothers and sisters, who I hope are all doing well, as well as her mom, Mattie. Rita is well, healthy, and happy, and showing no signs of slowing down! She had a bit of a health emergency last weekend when she ate some bark, but the folks at OSU watched her overnight and gave her an IV and immediately returned her to normal conditions! Rita truly is a fine dog and the light of my life.

Meeting New Dogs in the Neighborhood!

New dogs are always arriving in Clintonville! Sukie, a mixed breed about 15 pounds smaller than Rita, has moved into Milton's old digs next door, and new door to him is Oscar, a happy go lucky pit bull mix. Rosie is a basset pup who lives on the next street, along with Dexter, a well-behaved pit bull, both of whom Rita has met. On the other side of our house are existing dog pals the Micropups (aka Oliver and Ella) and Waldo, who are all healthy and happy!

Rita has been enjoying many visits this summer with Keith, her human BFF, who lives across the street from me.

Some Dogs Like to Swim, Some Don't!

Rita and I had a very nice time at the park one evening last week, and we met a man named Dave and his very beautiful young doberman Abby. Dobermans apparently don't particularly like to swim! Rita, with her powerful Lab genes, was swimming maniacally, but all Abby would do was prance around in the shallows watching her and probably wondering what on Earth she was doing in that deep water!

Rita's histiocytoma on her leg has almost disappeared, but it seems likely to leave a pink bald spot!

Rita recently developed a fast-growing lump on her right front leg. Very scary! Fortunately, a biopsy showed it was a histiocytoma, a benign growth. It will have to be watched to make sure it doesn't bother Rita, but for now she doesn't even seem to notice it.

Another Dog Rescued!

I met a newly rescued pup here at work yesterday! Maximus is an Italian greyhound, about 9 months old, bought from a pet store, whose family was confused by his needs - his needs to run and burn off energy! They confined the poor boy to a crate most of the day. But he's just been rescued and adopted by a coworker who's had sight hounds before, so now Maximus will get the fun and play he needs!

Weather Improves; Dogs Abound!

Last weekend was a fun weekend for Rita, with greatly improved weather. We took several good walks, met people, and some new dogs! Stella is a lab mix puppy who lives almost at the end of street. She and Rita had a polite meet-and-greet on their walks Sunday. On Saturday Rita got to meet German Shepherd Banks, and they had a good time hanging out and playing a bit, and Rita had some time playing with Waldo next door as well. Down the street, Brownie, one of Rita's dog acquaintances, had a nice visit from her East Coast pal Bean, so the dogs were out, about, and having fun on Como Avenue!

We Loved Daddy

Rita and I are faithful viewers of "The Dog Whisperer," so we're sad to hear of the passing of Cesar's wise and gentle pitbull, Daddy. He was a great ambassador for his breed, and he aided Cesar in helping many dogs. A sad time for us, and all honor and love to Daddy!

Dog stuff on our street

Anabelle, who I've mentioned before as a neighbor dog, has moved to Canada with her family. Waldo, the pup next door, is nearly six months old and so far is much smaller than anyone guessed he would be - he may end up smaller than Rita! A surprisingly dog-tolerant cat has been hanging out in the neighborhood lately and spent most of the weekend sleeping in a chair on our porch, much to Rita's bemusement.
