The Day No One Wants to See

Dear friends, Rita passed away on August 25, 2015. She was 13 1/2 years old. She'd been fighting cancer since January, and was doing very well until this very morning. When I got home from work - something was wrong. We took a walk, slow, plodding, but full distance - she wanted to see all her favorite places. We came home, she drank a little water, turned down any food or treats, and declined rapidly until she passed away just before 10 p.m. She was my dearest friend, and I will always love her. The house seems so empty and so silent now.

I've been composing entries for Rita's birthday for several years now. Sadly, this might be the last one. Today, Rita is 13. She is still hanging strong, but she has cancer and her days are likely limited. She still loves to stroll the neighborhood and see her human and dog friends. We have been specially blessed by her human BFF Keith who visits her when I am at work, and by special friends who have contributed to the cost of her surgery.

Rita has always been a very good and very loving dog, and she remains one to this day. She is still very active with good eyesight and reflexes and no evident problems with her joints. We will enjoy the days we have and celebrate each one, and when the time comes I hope I can remember all the joy and love she's brought me through the 13 years I've known her.

Sad Days for Rita

I wish I had better news for all of Rita's friends. As she approaches her 13th birthday, her overall health is remarkable. But sadly she has cancer. A few weeks ago a very large tumor called an adenocarcinoma was removed from near her bladder. This is a kind of cancer that spreads, and even now, just three weeks after surgery, certain symptoms are beginning to recur. It's an agonizing thing to realize and admit that my much-loved Rita likely has little time.

But we will enjoy it. Her birthday is coming up; we will celebrate. We will take every day as it comes. And I have promised her she will not be in pain.

What fun that Rita's Blog is Diary of the Day! Hi, everyone! Rita celebrated her 12th birthday last week. Today we're having a snowstorm, but Rita loves snow, and just had an energetic run around the yard of her human BFF Keith who lives across the street from us.

Today marks Rita's 12 birthday, and I'm pleased to be able to report that she remains in excellent health and spirits. She's a little gray here and there, but her step is still springy, she chases squirrels with abandon, and her love of her people and dog friends is unabated!

Today is Rita's 11 birthday. Unlike many dogs, her actual birthday is known. I often wonder how her mom, Mattie, and her nine siblings are doing. Rita is doing well. She is very energetic and loves people and most other dogs. She's had bouts with diarrhea and urinary tract infections, but thankfully so far nothing more serious. Like most dogs, she's getting lumpy as she ages, so I have to watch those carefully. Rita is a GOOD DOG and she is loved by me and many others! Happy birthday, Sweetpea!

New Dogs on our Street!

Dogs come and go on Como Ave. Sweet neighbor dog Brownie passed away during a walk a few months ago, but I can happily report that her mom is now the proud guardian of Amy, a beautiful and very sweet 1 year old shar-pei and who knows what else mix! Amy is a little shy, having been in a situation where she had been attacked by other dogs, but is coming out of her shell and is a joy and delight! Terrier mix Dexter has moved in next door, and is a maniacal ball of fire. Mix breed Wellington arrived down the street recently when her dad bought a house; she and Rita are getting to know one another a bit cautiously, but with good behavior on both sides. Sadly, neighbor dog Waldo, who we've known from a pup, will be moving away shortly as his parents have bought a house. But the dogs are out on Como Avenue!

A terrible tragedy happened on our street last week when beloved neighborhood dog Brownie collapsed and died during her walk. Much love and sympathy to her human, Nancy, and her best dog buddy Bean.

Tomorrow, Rita will be 10. Interestingly, there were 10 puppies in her mother Mattie's litter. Rita is happy and healthy. She has a bit of grey starting to show on her muzzle and face, but she is still active and graceful, though she slows down a bit quicker when playing hard. Rita is the light of my life and has many, many friends in our neighborhood.

Rita's tiny buddies the Micropups are moving soon to a new place. Ella the rat terrier and Oliver the chihauhua have become good friends of Rita's and we'll miss them! Let's hope some new friendly dog or dogs moves into their old place.
