Sun Sign: Quick Bio:
 Birthday: February 25th 2002
Likes: Chewing rawhides, playing with dog friends, getting belly rubs and scratchies, riding in the car, and swimming. But what she loves most is visiting her many human friends!

Pet-Peeves: Easily scared by new or sudden things - she seems a little more anxious this year

Favorite Toy: Anything that squeaks and squeals hideously

Favorite Food: Milkbones! She also eats raw broccoli! Rita also likes to vacuum up hailstones after a storm!

Favorite Walk: Anywhere with good smells, but usually down our street or at Whetstone Park

Best Tricks: She can back up lying down; she also does a four-legged "mountain goat leap" onto furniture

Arrival Story: Our older dog was fading fast, and when visiting the vet to pick up her medicine we saw a sign on the door "Puppies, Lab/Shepherd mix, $35." We got the address from the vet and found that the guys who had the puppies had been about to have their dog spayed when she became pregnant and they became the fathers of 10 puppies! Rita was the runt of the litter; they called her "Peanut." She had a loving puppyhood with her mother Mattie and foster dad Lane, a rescue dog the guys had adopted from our vet. Lane was very gentle and patient with the puppies.

Bio: Although the sign at the vet's said "Lab/Shepherd mix" the mother looks like a chocolate lab/weimaraner mix; we're not sure what her father was (probably a pit bull), but none of the puppies had any shepherd characteristics that I could discover!

Today is Rita's 11 birthday. Unlike many dogs, her actual birthday is known. I often wonder how her mom, Mattie, and her nine siblings are doing. Rita is doing well. She is very energetic and loves people and most other dogs. She's had bouts with diarrhea and urinary tract infections, but thankfully so far nothing more serious. Like most dogs, she's getting lumpy as she ages, so I have to watch those carefully. Rita is a GOOD DOG and she is loved by me and many others! Happy birthday, Sweetpea!

Dogs come and go on Como Ave. Sweet neighbor dog Brownie passed away during a walk a few months ago, but I can happily report that her mom is now the proud guardian of Amy, a beautiful and very sweet 1 year old shar-pei and who knows what else mix! Amy is a little shy, having been in a situation where she had been attacked by other dogs, but is coming out of her shell and is a joy and delight! Terrier mix Dexter has moved in next door, and is a maniacal ball of fire. Mix breed Wellington arrived down the street recently when her dad bought a house; she and Rita are getting to know one another a bit cautiously, but with good behavior on both sides. Sadly, neighbor dog Waldo, who we've known from a pup, will be moving away shortly as his parents have bought a house. But the dogs are out on Como Avenue!

A terrible tragedy happened on our street last week when beloved neighborhood dog Brownie collapsed and died during her walk. Much love and sympathy to her human, Nancy, and her best dog buddy Bean.
