   Leave a bone for Rita

Little Rita, Sweetpea, Baby Dog (aka B-dog for short), Peanut, Rita Skeeter, Sillypuppy

Doggie Dynamics:
not playfulvery playful

Sun Sign:
Quick Bio:

February 25th 2002

Chewing rawhides, playing with dog friends, getting belly rubs and scratchies, riding in the car, and swimming. But what she loves most is visiting her many human friends!

Easily scared by new or sudden things - she seems a little more anxious this year

Favorite Toy:
Anything that squeaks and squeals hideously

Favorite Food:
Milkbones! She also eats raw broccoli! Rita also likes to vacuum up hailstones after a storm!

Favorite Walk:
Anywhere with good smells, but usually down our street or at Whetstone Park

Best Tricks:
She can back up lying down; she also does a four-legged "mountain goat leap" onto furniture

Arrival Story:
Our older dog was fading fast, and when visiting the vet to pick up her medicine we saw a sign on the door "Puppies, Lab/Shepherd mix, $35." We got the address from the vet and found that the guys who had the puppies had been about to have their dog spayed when she became pregnant and they became the fathers of 10 puppies! Rita was the runt of the litter; they called her "Peanut." She had a loving puppyhood with her mother Mattie and foster dad Lane, a rescue dog the guys had adopted from our vet. Lane was very gentle and patient with the puppies.

Although the sign at the vet's said "Lab/Shepherd mix" the mother looks like a chocolate lab/weimaraner mix; we're not sure what her father was (probably a pit bull), but none of the puppies had any shepherd characteristics that I could discover!

Rita would have been 14

February 25 was a very hard day for me; Rita would have been 14. Until she developed cancer I thought it was very likely she would reach and exceed that age, as she was strong and healthy all of her life until the last months. I don't yet have a new dog, but I have a dog friend who lives on our street named Roo who I walk every day. I miss my girl so much.

The Day No One Wants to See

Dear friends, Rita passed away on August 25, 2015. She was 13 1/2 years old. She'd been fighting cancer since January, and was doing very well until this very morning. When I got home from work - something was wrong. We took a walk, slow, plodding, but full distance - she wanted to see all her favorite places. We came home, she drank a little water, turned down any food or treats, and declined rapidly until she passed away just before 10 p.m. She was my dearest friend, and I will always love her. The house seems so empty and so silent now.

Rita is 13

I've been composing entries for Rita's birthday for several years now. Sadly, this might be the last one. Today, Rita is 13. She is still hanging strong, but she has cancer and her days are likely limited. She still loves to stroll the neighborhood and see her human and dog friends. We have been specially blessed by her human BFF Keith who visits her when I am at work, and by special friends who have contributed to the cost of her surgery.

Rita has always been a very good and very loving dog, and she remains one to this day. She is still very active with good eyesight and reflexes and no evident problems with her joints. We will enjoy the days we have and celebrate each one, and when the time comes I hope I can remember all the joy and love she's brought me through the 13 years I've known her.
