Arrival Story:
I'd been thinking of getting a dog for a couple of years and one day I decided to check out the SPCA. Right there in the middle of the second pen was an alert, confident, 3-month old, purebred Karelian Bear Dog. He sure had the look.

Karelians are a "Spitz-type" from Finland and Northern Russia. You can see from the second picture they look just like a Spitz but are black and white instead of reddish brown. The breed is recognized in Canada and elsewhere, but not in the United States. Actually, even here in Canada, they're pretty rare. Karelians have a Jeckel and Hyde personality. They are very friendly towards humans, including children. On the other hand, they're quite aggressive towards other animals, especially cats. To a Karelian, the world is divided up into humans (good) and prey or competitors (bad). This means they can't be let loose in a dog park or doggy daycare once they're over nine months old and can't be let off leash in wilderness areas because they'll chase deer. You might ask, well why keep one? The answer is that if you hike extensively in bear country, a Karelian could save your life. They are one of the few breeds that will stand up to an aggressive bear, using a combination of bravery and agility to stop a bear attack. They're also smart enough to break off an attack on a bear and retrace their steps to find their master. In short, a perfect wilderness dog. If this applies to you, great. If it doesn't, you really will be much happier with a breed that has a more relaxed attitude. With Karelians, every walk is a hunting trip.
