Arrival Story:
We lost our dog, P.J. (a german shepard/doberman mix) at age 16 on Thanksgiving weekend. We had talked about adopting a greyhound many times, but we missed having a dog in our life, so this was the impetus for actually looking into an adoption. We contacted the local rescue organization, Hollydogs and filled out the paperwork. Silvana, who runs the organization, was so nice and helpful and really accomodating. We stopped by to look at some dogs that might be a good fit. We were convinced that we only wanted a male and didn't want a brindle. They brought out 2 males at first: one fawn and one brindle. The brindle had gorgeous tiger stripes and we thought he was the one. Then they brought out Pepper: a 5 year old black female that had just recently come off the track. She had an illustrious racing career and was so good that they wanted to use her for breeding. They tried during only once, but she didn't come into heat, so they gave her to the rescue organization. She came to Hollydogs about the same time as we lost P.J., so we look at that as a sign. We fell in love right there. We couldn't take her that day because of extenuating circumstances, but when we came back 2 weeks later, she still remembered us and jumped right up on us. We feel blessed to have her in our home and I think she saved us just as much as we saved her. Soon, she will have a playmate to keep her company.

They raced her for about 5 years and she placed 1st or 2nd about 90% of the time, winning over $100,000 (none of which we saw! - LOL)

Today we went with the whole family to Hollydogs Greyhound Picnic at TY Park in Hollywood, Florida. There was fun and games and contests and I got to meet lots of new friends. Most of the other dogs there were also from Hollydogs. There were several dogs up for adoption and my family was checking them out because we want to get a friend to keep me company while everyone is at work/school. I wasn't too interested in the other dogs, though. I was more interested in seeing how many people I could get to pet me. I dragged the whole family around the park in search of more people to love me. I did like this one dog, a red brindle named Scamp. He is about 3 1/2 years old and just got off the track. He really took to my family and was real sweet around me. Plus, he followed me everywhere and let me take the lead, which I loved. By the end of the day, my family had really taken to him and talked to Silvana at Hollydogs in holding him for adoption. I really liked him too...until he tried to mount me. You see, he isn't fixed yet and I guess I am just so attractive, he couldn't help himself. As long as he doesn't do that when he comes to live with us, I think we could become great pals. I was entered in a bunch of contests and did pretty well. I came in first for Best Smile, placed in the Longest Tail and tied for first for the Baldest Butt. I really should have won that outright because Chewbacca (Chewy) had more hair on his butt than I did. But, he was really sweet and it looks like we might be related (he looks just like me, but he is 5 years older, and his parents told my family that they have some Mohicans in his family), so it was fine with me. I won lots of prizes and lots of fun, but by the end of the day, I was pooped. I slept the whole way home. I can't wait for the Barefoot on the Beach in September!
