   Leave a bone for Opal

Reg. Name: Monterey Black Opal. Nicknames: Zen Princess, Freckle Butt, Propeller Butt, Opelope (she bounds through the grass like a little antelope), Jackalope (the dog is 12" tall and can jump 6' straight up), Little Dumper

Doggie Dynamics:
not playfulvery playful

Quick Bio:

February 6th 2005

Sterling! Anything that Sterling has and she doesn't. Cuddling and eating. Running in circles. Jumping straight up from a sitting position (5 feet in the air).

Trains -- she's never seen one, but if Opal hears one chug by, she goes into Guard Mode. Opal doesn't really have any other pet peeves. She's so laid-back and sweet.

Favorite Toy:
Opal likes toys she can chew on, and chew on ... the miniature tire, Nylabone teething keys, and rope toy are her favorites. She'll steal Sterling's stuffed toys and demolish them if given the chance.

Favorite Food:
Puppy Kibble, Chicken, Broccoli, Bananas and of course Sterling's tail

Favorite Walk:
Going behind or underneath anything Sterling is too big to get under ... and then exploding out at him when he walks by!

Best Tricks:
Annoying Sterling by being a "goody two-shoes." Ignoring you when you say "come," but charging straight at you if you call "Opelopelopelope!!!"

Arrival Story:
I didn't meet Opal until the day she came home to me at 8 weeks of age. I knew I wanted a female Rat Terrier friend for Sterling, so Opal was picked for her great temperment ... and she's lived up to all that puppy promise. I never met a sweeter dog than the amazing Opelope!

Opal is the most confident, calm and cool-headed puppy I've ever met. If she were a horse, you'd call her "bomb-proof." Nothing fazes Opal. She's just as happy, sweet and smart as could be!

Forums Motto:
The Little Cow-Print Engine that Could

Favorite Place to Sleep:
Halfway under the covers on the bed ... with her head buried and her butt sticking straight up in the air.

Greatest Challenge in Life:
Getting her left ear to stand up. She has good ear days and bad ear days. :)

Most Obnoxious Habit:
Chewing on Sterling's neck ... actually, grabbing Sterling's neck and shaking her head like she's killing a rat. Sigh.

Most Endearing Quality:
Opal is the original love bug. You never met a more cuddly, super-sweet, sqeezeable dog.

I dare you!

I swear, if that big lug knocks me out of our new hammock one more time, I'm gonna come unglued! No joke .. I'll do it. And that's not a threat. It's a promise.

So we have a hammock in our backyard now. I was wary of it at first, but when I saw Mom lounging in it, and Sterling bouncing around on it, I decided I may as well give it a try. Little scary at first, since it moves when you walk, but once I got the hang of it I liked it a LOT!

Until Sterling noticed me in "his" hammock that is. I swear, that nut thinks anything he discovers or touches first BELONGS to him. Hmph! This is a FAMILY hammock I say. We're to share it! Right. Tell that to Sterling.

His new favorite game is to wait until I'm snoozing gently in the hammock, then sneak under me (under the hammock too, I guess) and pop up barking. I JUMP! And then of course fall out of the hammock. And Sterling just about falls over laughing everytime he does it.

Yeah, thanks. Real funny, Sterling. I'll show you. You just wait. :)

Plotting my revenge,

Wow, poor guy!

Poor Sterling! Really ... usually I like to make fun of the guy, but today I was very nice to him, because I really DO feel sorry for him!

Check out his entry from today ... you'll see he's had a rough couple of days with violent sneezing, followed by general anesthesia and a fiber-optic camera up his nose. Last night, when he came home from the vet's, the poor guy was so loopy that he could barely walk, let alone play with me. I'm a pretty perceptive little girl, though. I can tell Sterling's not feeling well, so I'm trying my puppy-best to take care of him.

Today, he slept most of the day ... on the couch, curled up in his blankie. Whenever I felt a nap coming on, I hopped up and curled up with him, just to make sure he felt loved. Tonight, he seemed to be feeling a little better, because he came down off of the couch to steal my food. Hey, good sign, right? I let him share. Wouldn't happen if he were 100%, but I can be generous when I have to. :)

I think I'll go sleep with the poor fellow some more. Surely, that makes him feel better.

At least he can't chase me ...

Okay. I'm not a mean little dog. I really do feel sorry for Sterling, with his sore, bleeding toes ... but for the first time in my life, I'm faster than he is!

So, for me at least, there are some benefits to Sterling's current wounded state. I can steal from him at will. 'Cept Mom doesn't let me get away with it if she sees me do it. If she's not looking though, I can run up, grab Sterling's bully stick, and run off without worrying about him tackling me!!

Well, maybe I'll be nice to the poor guy, but I do think I'll run a few laps around him before bedtime, just for good measure. :)

Still runnin'
