Castor & Pollux Dog Food Reviewed

Who Makes Castor Pollux and Where Is It Produced?

Castor & Pollux is a relatively new dog food company. Founded in 2000 by Brian Connolly and Shelly Gunton, this food came to tuition at their home in Clackamas, Oregon after the 2 adopted a Lab/pointer mix puppy named Joey. They intended to feed Joey only the best, organic dog food possible, but to their disappointment, they couldn’t find one on the market that met their standards. This was when they decided to take on the task themselves and started their own business.

As time passed, and word of Castor & Pollux spread, the international pet food company, Merrick, became interested. In 2012, Merrick purchased Castor & Pollux. It was then that Castor & Pollux left their home in Oregon and moved operations to Amarillo, Texas where they still reside today. The buyout and move didn’t affect the company’s standards, however. Castor & Pollux remains one of the US’s only certified pet food brands on the market today.

    What Is the Organix Line?

According to information found on their website, Castor & Pollux produces 3 main dog food lines, Organix, Natural Ultramix, and Pristine. Organix, however, is the line that truly launched the company and provides them with their biggest claim to fame. The line is referred to by the company as the only complete line of USDA organically certified pet food. The foods in this line are made with either free-range chicken or turkey as their primary ingredient and main source of protein. All foods in this line are also made without the use of pesticides, artificial preservatives, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics, or growth hormones. You’ll also find that the foods in this line are free of fillers you would prefer not to feed your pet.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

You’ll find a few of the same ingredients in each of the foods in the Castor & Pollux Organix line. Let’s take a look at them and whether they are truly beneficial for your dog.

    Free-Range Organic Chicken

Chicken is a great source of protein for your pets. It ensures your dog is getting the fatty acids they need, vitamins and minerals, and even amino acids. The organic free-range chicken used by Castor & Pollux is USDA-certified and a great source of energy for your pet.

    Free-Range Organic Turkey

Like with the chicken in the Organix line, free-range turkey is the main source of protein in the products featuring it. It is also USDA-certified and easy to digest making it great for dogs with stomach issues.

    Healthy Grains

Unless you purchase the grain-free options from Castor & Pollux most of their recipes include healthy grains aimed at helping your dog’s digestive system. You’ll also find that these grains are good sources of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

    Peas and Pea Fiber

Unfortunately, some dogs have issues digesting peas and pea fibers. This makes including it in a recipe a bit controversial. However, Castor & Pollux stand by their decision to include this legume in hopes of providing your dog with a good source of fiber.
